Life & Work with Marcus “Goodie” Goodloe, Ph.D.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus “Goodie” Goodloe, Ph.D.. Them and their team share their story with us below:

A Compton, California native, Marcus “Goodie” Goodloe, Ph.D. travels around the country mentoring students and educators, business professionals, athletes and entertainers, and faith communities on a range of issues including cultural and interpersonal relationships, leadership, team and synergy, character formation, and faith. At present, Goodie is on the pastoral care team of Flourishing Church, Los Angeles, and serves as one of the church’s elders. He served as an active volunteer of Wave Church, Los Angeles, California (2015-2019), where he headed up the pastoral care team; he was on the speaking team for the other Wave Church campuses. Additionally, he was the Associate Teaching Pastor at Parkcrest Church, in Long Beach, California (2016-2019); and he has served as an adjunct professor at Dallas Baptist University, in Dallas, Texas since 2012. Goodie is a member of the inaugural cohort for Ph.D. studies at DBU(2005); and, he is the first African American to graduate with a Ph.D. from that respective program (2011).He has worked with The Oklahoma University (Football Team), Dallas Baptist University Athletics, Southern Mississippi University (All Sports), The University of New Mexico (All Sports), Kansas University (Football Team), Maryland University (Football Team), The University of Nebraska (Football Team), Fellowship of Christian Athletes at the national and state levels, and professional football teams from NFL (National Football League) and USFL (United States Football League), respectively. Goodie serves on the Community Engagement Board for Redondo Beach Police Department, as well as a department Chaplin. Additionally, he continues to work with members of the law enforcement community as well as community activists in efforts to foster better understanding and education, on matters of fairness and justice with respect to the judicial system, and cooperative policing. Goodie is the author of three books: “King Maker: Applying Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Leadership Lessons in Working with Athletes and Entertainers” (2015), co-author of “Habits: Six Steps To The Art Of Influence” (2017), and The Next Level: Growing with God…in His Word, Your Walk, and Your Worship(2022).

In 2016, Dallas Baptist University established the Marcus Goodie Goodloe Scholarship in his honor. In 2020 Goodie was selected to serve as Senior Fellow for Ethics and Justice at the Dallas Baptist University Institute for Global Engagement (IGE); Goodie and his wife of 24 years, Lucy, live in the Los Angeles area and have two children, Hannah Marie (age 20) and Joshua C.H. (age 18).

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Raised in the inner city of Compton, California, by a single-parent mom. She raised my two sisters and me in a housing project.

Married to an amazing woman (Lucy)…a cancer survivor (stage 4). That was a journey unlike any other.

Mental health, failure in careers, poor decisions in business…where do we begin?

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The overarching formal training and passion is leadership development. I work with various organizations and entities in order for them to reach their goals and objectives; this includes my time with leaders of those entities as well.

I am a MLKJR scholar; I write and remain an advocate for matters of justice, fairness, equality and diversity.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Once did color commentary for local CBS affiliate (Albuquerque, NM) for football over a two years span.

I love to play golf; if you look at me on the golf course before I tee off, it appears as if I can really play the game. But, it remains a work in progress.

I run 4-5 miles daily. I’m a Huge U2 and Coldplay Fan (6&2 concerts). Yes, I’m a “foodie” as well.
