Today we’d like to introduce you to Jul Kohler.
Hi Jul, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Berlin, Germany, and knew at four years old, after I watched the ballet The Nutcracker that I was meant to perform, entertain, and to create empowering stories. As an artist, I started as a dancer. From Ballett to Jazz to Hip Hop, my talent put me front and center with artists like Katy Perry, Rihanna, Lou Bega, and New Kids On The Block on their world tours and award shows. I also danced in Musicals, fashion shows, sports brands, and industrials. My work also includes acting, stunts, and voice-overs all across the globe.
At the age of 17, I moved to Amsterdam and studied at The Theaterschool, now known as The Academy of Theatre and Dance. A decade ago, I was led to Los Angeles, and after touring the world as a performer, I acted on TV shows and films. This year, 2021, I had a recurring role in an Apple Plus TV show and a supporting role in a Netflix Comedy movie. Both will be released next year in 2022.
For the past eight years, I have also explored the filmmaking world as a writer and producer for multiple projects; several of which are currently being developed. My female-driven Western short film BURY ME NOT circled multiple film festivals. It had its World Premiere at the Mammoth Film Festival, screened at LA Shorts, Newport Beach Film Festival, HollyShorts, and Nightmares Film Festival. It also got into the Cannes short film corner.
My new short film Chrysalis, a psychological thriller, is currently in post-production. I’m also developing 4 TV shows and three movies.
I am drawn to dark and edgy stories that explore empathy and compassion in both genres: Drama & Comedy.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My biggest struggle was the journey towards becoming a US citizen. Which I know am. My emotional struggle was and still is TRUST. Trusting the universe but mostly myself, and my soul. But I always come back to my journey and to what my heart desires. Spirituality helps me, as well as taking time to myself, like meditating and working on trust exercises.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m proud of my multi-talents as a dancer, actress, stunts, motion-capture artist, Voice Over Artist, and filmmaker.
I am proud of having one of my biggest dreams made come true: Touring the US and the World as a backup dancer. But of course, you always want more.
I’m proud of my Western short film BURY ME NOT that you can currently watch on the Omeleto platform http://omeleto.com/
I am insanely proud of my amazing filmmaker friends and producing and creating partners because nothing matters more than having a strong team with you on your journey. A team that makes you better as an artist and as a human. I’ve been very lucky with that. And so proud of my wonderful reps that are working their butts off for me. Powerful teams all around. Teamwork makes the dream work!
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
