Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariel Sosa.
Hi Mariel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a Film director & editor from Lima, Peru. I graduated from Loyola Marymount University – School of Film and Television in Los Angeles, California. My connection to Nature and curiosity about the human condition deepened with my travels around the world. Driven by this passion, I directed my short film Máxima: This Land of Mine, which portrays the power struggle between a peasant woman and a billionaire miner. The film premiered at the Austin Film Festival and won the Jury Award at the 2019 Newport Beach Festival.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
During my first college years, I struggled to find my voice as a filmmaker. However, that quickly changed after graduation, when I became involved in the latino film’s community in the U.S.
In 2018, I was the winner of the ECCS scholarship presented by The National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP). That same year, I was a fellow of the Tomorrow’s Filmmakers Today program organized by the Hola México Festival (HMFF). Thanks to these meetings with industry professionals, I was able to make my next Say You Will short film project, premiered worldwide at the 2020 Los Angeles International Latino Festival.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As an extension of myself, my films often explore the themes of cultural identity, family, and memory. In this context, I am driven by raw, psychological narratives, finding meaningful connections through visual poetry.
Currently, I am an ambassador for Ms. Magazine, where I strive to empower diverse voices and women through their own personal stories and experiences in the film industry. My work has been published in renowned magazines, including The Hollywood Reporter, Movie Maker and Variety. Malamente is my first feature film, which is currently in-development.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Follow your instinct.
