Life & Work with Dusty Saunders

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dusty Saunders.

Hi Dusty, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I loved cartoons as a kid and still do. I started making my own animations on my laptop as hobby, and it has been slowly evolving into a larger and larger body of work.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There have been struggles, but I consider myself extremely lucky. I have my health, a roof over my head, food on the table, and have been able to find enough time here and there to work on my art. Considering everything going on in the world, I’d say the road has been pretty smooth.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I make original animations. Mixed media is my specialty, so the cartoons I make is usually a combination of 2D and 3d, with photos, drawings, and real video all smashed together.

In 2018 I started a web series called “Happy Transmissions” with my good friend Kyle Mayfield. I do all the visuals and Kyle does all the original music. The story although I do consider it to be narrative has no dialogue whatsoever. It is a balancing act of visuals and music, following the same characters around a semi-psychedelic landscape. I’m super grateful to have Kyle on this project. He interprets the visuals perfectly with his sounds and is an incredibly talented artist. I’m really proud of this project. We have several new episodes in the pipeline that are coming out soon, and I have all the intentions in the world of keeping this thing going.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Whether we know it or not I think everything we do involves risk, and I think 2020 really shoved that in our faces. When making art, I think risk-taking is a bit paradoxical. If you don’t take risks, you risk being the same as everyone else. There is nothing wrong with that, but in the digital age and being so interconnected, you really have to stand out to get noticed. I’m making the kind of work that I would like to see, and I’m not trying to pander to what is popular… but I would be lying if I were to say I don’t care if I get noticed or not. It feels good to have your work appreciated. I want to do something that makes people happy, and to fail at doing so is a risk in itself.
