Inspiring Conversations with Ruth Sandoval of Delmy’s Pupusas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruth Sandoval.

Hi Ruth, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hailing from El Salvador, I come from three generations of chefs: My Grandma (Abuela), my Mom (Madre), and now me. And we are all still working and making our pupusas! When I was seven years old, my Abuela would send me to the mill to grind the corn. Then I would carry the ground corn in a basket on my head to take it home so we could begin to make our family’s recipe of Pupusas.

I came to the U.S. without any shoes cause I had to run from immigration. Now, I am a proud owner of my business, Delmy’s Pupusas and I sell thousands of pupusa’s throughout California! At Delmy’s Pupusas, I have married the flavors of my country with fresh healthy ingredients. Pupusas are little pockets of love!

We are the first to create a vegan pupusa! Using fresh organic handmade masa we fill our little pockets of love w/ fresh organic, seasonal locally grown veggies from our farmer’s markets.

We service seven prominent farmer’s markets throughout L.A. Delmy’s pupusas were even the first-ever served at the famous Coachella & Stagecoach events. Delmy’s pupusas’ even have a SAG card and they have been featured on numerous TV shows.

We’ve been awarded by Mayor Garcetti and the city of Los Angeles for our dedication and service to the community. Noted local PBS station KCET profiled Delmy’s as a hidden treasure in Los Angeles.

Throughout the pandemic Delmy’s pupusas served our homeless community and partnered w/ SEELA to serve to meals to those in need.

Salvisoul is a Salvadorian cookbook soon to come out and I am one of the 30 chefs chosen to share my favorite El Salvadorian recipes!

Being able to continue to share my family’s heritage has been a blessing.

Desde mi corazon al tuyo. From my heart to yours! Buen Provecho!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Introducing pupusas to Coahella fest because people did not know what pupusas was since we were the first and only ones to sell pupusas at the Coahella fest. Doing Coahella fest was a lot of work at the begging it was really hard.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
