Life & Work with Shar Schmidt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shar Schmidt.

Hi Shar, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In August 2017, I found a lump in my breast. Soon after, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I didn’t know anyone my age that had cancer. I had no idea if I was going to live or die. My body felt foreign to me, and that was hard. I looked for ways to cope with the anxiety & depression that often comes with a cancer diagnosis – which is how I came to work with crystals. What started initially as me searching for ways to heal emotionally & spiritually became a small business that I love. My crystal pieces have been worn by family, friends, even a few celebrities. Not only are crystals pretty to look at, but when I use my hands to work, it helps keep my bones from becoming stiff, I get the vibes & energy of each stone I work with, and I get to pass that on to someone else. I love that! Even if you don’t believe in the spiritual healing power of crystals, you can’t deny their beauty – and wearing something that’s nice to look at makes you feel good, too.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s always challenging owning a small business, but it’s especially challenging when you are faced with so many body changes. Since my initial cancer diagnosis, I’ve also been diagnosed with menopause, osteoporosis, and hyperparathyroidism. There are days I’m in so much pain that I can’t create anything. Or I have doctor’s appointments. I’ve had six surgeries, the most recent being August 19th, and these challenges can sometimes feel like obstacles. Thankfully, I have the best support system! Family & friends that lend a hand when I need one – or two! There’s always a struggle financially as well when trying to get your business off the ground, and sometimes it seems like more struggle than reward. But then I get messages & emails from return customers that allow me to see how what I do impacts others – in a good way – so I keep going. I listen to my body when I need to rest, and I’ve never had a single customer not understanding of that. I’m blessed in that way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
To be honest, I’m most proud of starting this business without the help or guidance of anyone else. I didn’t go to school for business, so I don’t have any formal experience. But I just kind of went for it, and I’m really happy that I did. I think what sets me apart from other jewelry businesses is I make every piece by hand myself. I don’t have any business partners or employees. Every piece is made to order for THAT person. I cleanse each piece of any negative energy that may have attached itself to their pieces before sending them out, so when it arrives in their mailbox, it’s ready to wear & begin their healing.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice is just go for it. Don’t second guess yourself. Imposter syndrome is real, but don’t let it stop you. You never know what good could come out of following your dream. It’s not without its challenges. It might not be easy or feel natural at first. You’ll find your groove.
