Meet Jennifer Langley of Jennifer Langley Artistry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Langley.

Jennifer, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I strongly believe that makeup is one of the most impactful ways to express yourself. Everyone’s idea of beauty is different and individual to them, whether that is natural to full glamour makeup; or becoming a full creative imaginary character to a frightening creature. Each and every application I do is specifically tailored to each client’s personality, image, skin type, and style. I strive towards an aesthetic that makes my clients feel empowered and to bring their inner beauty to the outside.

My passion for beauty makeup and special effects started when I was a very young child when watching The Munsters for the first time. I absolutely love the freedom of imagination and creating gorgeous faces as well as creepy monsters. My career as an artist has quickly evolved and allowed me to travel to many new places shaping me to become the person that I am today. I spent 8 years working as a restaurant manager but as an ambitious woman I decided to follow my dreams; left my management position at the top of my game to pursue my passion. When I started my Beauty Makeup career in 2011, I worked with local high schools doing proms and winter formals, as well as “every 15 minutes” and a lot of runway shows.

I started in the Special Effects world of creating monsters, using prosthetics and face painting in 2012. I was asked to do the Raw Artist Showcase featuring my special effects makeup and face painting skills in September 2013 and made it to the Semi-Finals for the RAWAwards December 2013. In 2014, I joined the Knott’s Scary Farm team for their Haunt season and have been back every season.

I believe education is extremely important not only to keep up to date with all the current trends but also to advance my skills. In 2012, I decided to get my license in cosmetology. With my fascination for skin I decided to go to a Dermalogica school and there I received my esthetician license. Great makeup truly starts with amazing skin. I have also trained with the top beauty prodigy Donna Mee learning new innovative and advanced techniques. I now only use high grade, photographic, HD compatible, professional quality makeup and tools.

Has it been a smooth road?
There is always room for growth and learning along the way. Going to school once I was committed to what I really wanted to do was a lot of work. I went to Cosmetology school, I did 13 hour days and I finished in a little under 9 months. Finding time to do all the schooling is always a challenge because at the end of the day we still need to make sure our bills are paid.

Coming up with a business name probably has been my biggest challenge. Using my name Jennifer when I have gone by Jenn for 20 years has taken some time to get use too. That is why I still use JennsBeautyFX as my alias.

Though there have been some challenges, it has been absolutely worth it because the people I have met along the way in my journey are incredible. I am most sincerely grateful for my mentor Donna Mee and everything she has taught me.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in makeup and hair services for bridal, red carpet, commercial, print, film, speaking engagements and of course special effects. In the past year, I have added personalized classes for teens and adults who just want to learn makeup in a comfort of their own homes. I always try to inspire women to be the best they can be by believing in themselves.

I am most proud of how far my company has come from the beginning. From being asked to be in a show to being published for the first time! I love waking up and having something that I can call my own. There is so many new things in the works and I can hardly wait for what the future holds!

I think what sets me apart from others in my industry is being of service. I really make an effort to help with charity events throughout the year to help teens and foster kids feel beautiful. It is the most incredible experience giving back to the kids; especially when they take a look in the mirror for the first time and they are so excited to see themselves! If you haven’t done a charity event, I highly recommend it! The people I have met along the way at these events have really help grow my career because we share the same passion and love of community and the arts.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles and Orange County are great places for business. For someone just starting out, I would say really take advantage of being an assistant, learning the ropes first hand with some that has already gone down that road; it will make it easier in the long run. If you rather not go that route, I recommend doing your research and lots of practice!
