Life & Work with Sofiya Turin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofiya Turin.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born in St. Petersburg, Russia and moved to LA when I was 3.5 years old. I grew up writing poetry and wanting to make an impact in the lives of people. I went on to become a High School teacher and school counselor by day while performing as a spoken word artist by night. I fell in love with yogic philosophy and practice about 16 years ago and enjoy sharing both my poetry and yoga/meditation with all! I have been working with an LA-based composer, Stephen Thomas since October 2020, and he has written music for many of my poem pieces. They can be found on Insight Timer and we are currently working on a new poetry project.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing is ever too smooth in this life. There have always been plenty of challenges along the way. Lack of faith in myself and putting everything before my art have been some of the creative struggles. Sometimes you don’t see the point of sharing your art but then someone tells you how much your work impacted them or how it helped them, and you realize that that is exactly why you need to keep creating and sharing your gifts with the world!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Words are my passion and I have always enjoyed writing and expressing what I see poetically. My poems are meditations, that when set to music, allow the listener to be transported through time and space and to reconnect with the sacred oneness within.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Everyone I have ever met deserves credit. I have learned from every person in my life. Everyone has been a teacher and a guide in one way or another. I always say that there are no accidents in this life and I wholeheartedly believe that everyone and everything that comes into our lives comes to teach us something that no one/nothing else can.
