Conversations with Kaile Goh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaile Goh.

Hi Kaile, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Well… I’ve been modeling and commercial acting since I was three years old. That includes the years I spent living in Singapore where my dad is from. I moved to the States when I was about five years old so i grew up speaking both the Indonesian and English language. A lot of people dont know that about me. After years of working as a model (having to miss class all the time) and just writing songs for fun on the side of all that with my band..I was finally signed to Lava Universal Music Group under Jason Flom when I was just about.. i think only 12 or 13 years old. After spending three months in New York recording my album “Gold” with producer David Bendeth and my band at the time… Universal decided not to put money into promoting the album.. which is just another way of saying they decided to shelve it. I was young and wanted a “normal life” (whatever that means) and so mentally drained..i couldnt get myself to continue to try and find another label. I really took Universal shelving my album to heart… I wrote those songs and worked really hard writing and putting together a sick live show. But in the music industry, you need to have tougher skin than I had back then. rejection is more common than not. So I retreated back to modeling (my safe space) up until recently when I realized how unhappy I was with the thought of.. never recording another one of my songs. Thats what I’m doing now… still modeling (cause it pays the bills).. but working my hardest to get my new songs out there, writing everyday, releasing new songs as often as i can, and currently putting together a band of amazingly lovely people who just love the music and love putting on a sick live show. 🙂

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s forsure been challenging at times. There was a moment when I thought I was going to model and commercial act for the rest of my life and id never record another song again. and I was content with that idea… but just for a moment. In the back of my mind and in my heart I’ve always wanted to be a musician. to write and record again but i didn’t have the courage to. One of my new songs “Pocket Money” is about this very obstacle.. like ..do I take the chance or not? My other new song “Dissect My Brand” is about the music and modeling industry and how horrible they both can be.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I model and commercial act for a living. What sets me apart from others in the same line of work is definitely the fact that at one point i had this whole other career over a decade ago getting ready to tour Asia and doing highschool shows around the LA area.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Deciding to put modeling on the sidelines to focus on my music back when I was just a lil bitty girl barely even a teenager.. is the biggest risk I’ve ever taken. and it turned out to not be the best idea at the time and at that age… NOW… putting modeling BACK on the sidelines and getting BACK into the music industry.. is another huge risk I’m taking… but this time I won’t quit and I’m ready for all the rejection and acceptance the industry has to give. i dont really have much advice to give. ive made plently of mistakes in my life as far as “risk taking” goes. i guess all i can say about taking risks is that youll definitely regret it at some point.. and when you quit (or decide to stay in your safe space) youll regret that too. just a loose loose situation so do whatever the fuck you want, live your life, and do what you love.
