Meet Houda Afra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Houda Afra.

Hi Houda, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started bakedbyHouda almost a year ago, my coworkers encouraged it because of the amount of baked goods I would bring into the office. At the moment, I’m doing a bake relief for Lebanon and Palestine. All commissions are going to them at the end of September. I’m a first-generation Lebanese American, my parents and both of my sisters moved to Los Angeles after the civil war so this is definitely hitting home for me. At the moment, I work as a full-time healthcare worker, so I only bake part-time. I hope to someday bake full time and open up my own bakery.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I’ve had many tribulations due to Covid, but baking has definitely helped keep my mind at ease. I enjoy making people happy and I love making their bellies full.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a full-time healthcare worker in pediatrics and I bake part-time. I’m proud of what I do because I get to help out children and being able to have a small business during the weekends. I feel extremely accomplished. I’m not much of a competitor, which I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not but it definitely sets me apart from a lot of people because I do it from the heart.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I hope to own my own bakery.
