Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaz Cotharn.
Hi Jaz, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. I’m the oldest of four siblings, my parents had me at a young age so my childhood wasn’t like the average kids. I was taught to take care of things early, take risks, make big decisions, and work jobs to obtain income, nevertheless this is what made me who I am today. In middle school, I discovered that I was interested in Art, I taught myself how to draw. All through high school, I drew everything. I thought I wanted to be a tattoo artist, then I started taking graphic design classes in college and I thought I wanted to become a multimedia artist. However, I dropped out of college to take care of a family member who got sick with Cancer. At the time, life felt really dark.
About two years later, I was 22 and I moved to Los Angeles, California unexpectedly and somehow started a new life… I always wanted the feeling of actually living and existing in the world. I wanted to make an impact and have a successful future.
I started working at Walmart for about one and a half years, while I was working I told my coworker that I wanted to attend college again or a trade school. My coworker knew about the artistic side of me so she recommended that I went to barber school, once she said that it was stuck on my mind everyday for a week straight, then I started looking up information on schools and signed up instantly. I never thought I would be a barber ever in my life, but I’ve become so interested and passionate about it, I wanted to learn so fast because I knew in my mind how I wanted the outcome of a haircut to look but I had to learn how to use the tools and apply. I watched barber videos day and night, even while at work I offered to give free haircuts to people because I needed to learn and I didn’t know anyone in this new state. At the same time, I was working at Walmart and in barber school eventually, I started working in a barbershop while I was still in barber school and working Walmart overnight shift. I graduated beauty school, got my license, and my life changed ever since. Not only did I become successful as a barber, I learned that I am now making that impact I wanted to make and became existent to the world by providing a great service and connecting with people.
In 2020, I started my own fashion line called Vi$ionary Apparel Brand. I realized that all my childhood I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to do or who I wanted to be. With experience and time, I learned that everyone doesn’t have to know what that exact ONE thing is, maybe it’s multiple things, that’s when I learned that I wanted to be an entrepreneur because I have a visionary mindset. I like to create things and see it come to life.
Visionary Apparel Brand’s mission is to empower more like-minded people of all ages and whether or not they know what they want to do in life but to have faith and determination to create and achieve success in ways others may not see for you and for the future.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I learned that nothing in life is easy. Even when I’ve become more stable in my career, I still struggle and have obstacles. Most of my struggles included family troubles, finances, and keeping a positive mentality.

My first business is Jaz Cutz. Licensed barber, I specialize in versatility. I am not afraid of taking risks, I think being confident in who I am sets me apart from others and I am proud of who I am and what I’ve become. My second upcoming business is Visionary Apparel Brand.
