Today we’d like to introduce you to April Showers.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was always destined to be an entrepreneur.
Before launching Afro Unicorn a close male friend kept referring to me as a unicorn. At the time, I did not understand it. I truly thought I was just doing what every woman does, or at least what every woman should be doing. It wasn’t until I suffered a rather significant upset and then bounced all the way back that I realized I was indeed a unicorn the entire time.
YES! I am someone amazing, someone with strength, someone you just might consider a rare find; and now I was ready to build on this philosophy.
Looking at the established unicorn emoji as it is, I couldn’t relate. I wanted a unicorn that represented me and all the other fierce women that I knew. I reached out to my cousin and artist, Brian Ellis, and shared with him the vision I had for a unicorn of color. After about five sketch revisions Afro Unicorn was officially born – with all of her vanilla, caramel, and mocha complexions.
I have since created an entire line of apparel and everyday products to remind women of color just how unique, divine, and magical we truly are. Through the Afro Unicorn brand, I will continue to encourage women to make her mark in the world by showing how to harness her potentiality and guiding her to create financial independence through multiple income streams.
Afro Unicorn is an opportunity for women to connect, develop, and expand their individual brands. The Afro Unicorn goal is to cultivate an environment amongst a network of women to help one another succeed. We accomplish this through our line, in addition to annual conferences and workshops where we strategically plan to help women of color become self-motivated, grind with purpose, and build wealth.
On May 17th we celebrated our second year in business. In this short period of time, we have attracted the likes of celebrities – Alicia Keys, Tiffany Haddish, Sherri Shepard, and Anthony Hamilton, to name a few, along with a generous Instagram following. But more importantly, we have promoted over 500 businesses on our social media outlets for free.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There is nothing easy with starting successful brand. Afro Unicorn is not just a product line it’s a brand built on community. A lot of time goes into marketing and engagement. You cannot just build it and think people will come because it’s a dope product, you have to hit the pavement (or these social media streets) as I call it.
I don’t mind hard work so it’s not a struggle. It’s what’s required for success.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Afro Unicorn?
We offer our Afro Unicorn on t-shirts and accessories. Prior to Afro Unicorn Black Unicorns didn’t exist. As a matter of fact, no grown women wore unicorn shirts period. Afro Unicorn created a space for unicorns where there wasn’t a space before.
I am most proud of the movement of this brand. A ton of women and children have launched their businesses because of Afro Unicorn motivating them.
We have recently dropped our Afro Unicorn Stuffed Animal. We also have a children’s book series on the way.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
