Hidden Gems: Meet Sara Cameron, M.A., LMFT

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Cameron, M.A., LMFT.

Hi Sara, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m a relationship/psychology/leadership nerd. With the exception of my first year of college when I thought I’d be a business major, I’ve always known that I was going to work in the field of Mental Health. What I didn’t know is how many detours I would’ve taken along the way to becoming a Relationship Therapist and International Speaker. From stepping off of the path to licensure temporarily (three times) to explore opportunities in similar fields to being invited to give a TEDx talk about Work/Life Balance, it has been anything but predictable.

My personal healing journey has helped me further develop and refine my professional skillset, adding resilience, perspective and even enhancing my sense of humor. In addition to the challenges that naturally come with “humaning,” I’ve navigated depression, an emotionally-abusive relationship, and the kind of burnout that follows the constant drive to achieve X so that I could feel Y.

I’m keenly interested in the way that systems work; how a cultural system has influenced a family, how a family system has influenced the relationship dynamics of an individual, or how the relationship dynamics we have with ourselves impacts the relationships around us. I’ve learned that the more we can identify and understand our relationship dynamics, the easier it is to create and cultivate fulfilling lives.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Outside of some of the personal challenges I’ve already mentioned, the path to becoming a therapist in general is full of its own challenges. Oftentimes, pre-licensed therapists are unpaid, or overworked… or both. I worked multiple jobs even when I had paid positions in an effort to stay on track to earning the 3000 hours required for licensure before any expired (which occurs after the hours “turn six years old”); with the detours I ended up taking, I had about 1500 hours “expire.”

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am a Relationship Therapist and International Speaker. In my work as a therapist, I work with individuals and couples, providing trauma-informed, attachment- and somatic-based therapy. Many of my clients identify as high achievers, deep feelers, and/or people pleasers. I have recently completed a certification in Focalizing, a body-based mindfulness therapy that helps people better tune into and utilize the wisdom of their body to shift the kinds of outdated patterns that cause emotional and mental blocks. My next goal is to become an AAMFT-approved supervisor so that I may support pre-licensed therapists on their paths to licensure.

As an International Speaker, I provide workshops and talks to organizations and companies looking to enhance the support offered to their employees or improve their company culture; the most-requested topic I receive (especially during the pandemic) is that of Work/Life Balance.

I also serve as the Director of Consultation for the Community Mental Health Group, which offers sliding scale therapy and coaching services to the Orange County area.
