Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucia Gomez Koubi.
Hi Lucia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey began in Nice, France. When I moved from my hometown of Madrid to live by the water in the French Riviera for a couple of years, to finish my studies and learn the language. I was so in love with Nice, Cannes, Monaco… French culture shaped my personality and changed the way I see life. Its beauty awoke something inside me, that artist side I never thought I had. While in France, while I was modeling for a local bathing suit brand, I realized how far the swimwear industry is from being sustainable. I love the ocean, and after learning how much the fashion industry is damaging our planet combined with my new mindset, I took a decision that would change my life– beginning Sinipesa Swim.
I left Europe to follow “the American dream” and attempt to create beautiful swimsuits in California while also keeping that French spirit that I fell in love with. Even though I didn’t have a background in design or sewing, that didn’t stop me. I taught myself how to sew and then created the first Sinipesa Swim prototype by hand. That’s how it all started: as a passion project deeply rooted in love and appreciation for the ocean, the Earth, and the women living in it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t! There’s been a few struggles along the way, but the biggest has been Covid-19. First, the delivery of the recycled fabric that I use (it comes from Italy) was delayed. Then, the factory I work with in LA closed due to the pandemic. It was a disaster! I was supposed to launch the first collection on April 1st, but I obviously had to postpone it.
We’ve been impressed with Sinipesa Swim, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the owner of a sustainable swimwear brand based in LA called Sinipesa Swim. Sinipesa Swim is my biggest dream, is my creativity, my passion for arts and fashion, my desire to help the planet be a better and sustainable world, and my main way of expression. That is the energy that Sinipesa Swim was born from.
We provide sustainable swimsuits made out of plastic rescued from the ocean that are incredibly soft, comfortable, avant-garde but also timeless. We’re also very proud to be a brand built entirely by women. That’s why I aim to create a culture of body positivity, diversity, and self-love around Sinipesa Swim, by creating sexy yet elegant swimsuits that flatter different body types.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Not only the fabric we use is sustainable, but also every piece of the packaging. The swimsuits are shipped inside the cutest plant-based compostable mailer, wrapped with an eco-friendly paper tissue. We are always keeping the ocean in mind when making any decision for our brand.
This year, we are also growing our little beachwear collection, entirely sustainable as well!
