Exploring Life & Business with Heath Ryan of Pace Pictures

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heath Ryan.

Hi Heath, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my company in Australia when I was 14 years of age. Heath Ryan Media made wedding videos and industrial films for small businesses. At 15, I attended Hamilton College for Film and TV. Then from there, I was trained at the ABC in sound recording and editing. Moving to SAS Channel 7 as a part-time editor in news and current affairs. Still in my teens, I made “Love Pace’ a short film that won multiple awards at the Young Film Makers Festival and set me up with a job at Network 8 production house in Adelaide. Later I bought my first Avid and started making video clips for local and interstate bands and delving into advertising. By the end of the 90’s, I was traveling to Sydney every week to edit E! News Australia and running my post-production studio in Adelaide at the same time.

In 2001, I moved to Los Angeles and started work cutting trailers for Universal Pictures and later set up Pace Pictures to produce and edit feature films and TV.

2021, I have set up Pace Pictures at a studio in the heart of Hollywood with a XR Virtual Shooting stage and a Dolby Atmos Mixing room, two 4k Color Theaters, ADR booths and multiple edit suites.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been far from smooth. The industry is not a smooth road. Jumping from 1 employee to 3 was easy, 3- 10 a lot harder.

The most recent struggle is one we have all gone through and that is Covid. It not only shut us down for a long time but when we were able to start shooting again, the restrictions on shooting and the extra costs associated with testing and remaining compliant were a huge hurdle to navigate.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Pace Pictures is a full-service production house with a dedicated team of artists who love making films. We have been offering for many years now a complete beginning to end experience in making films and TV. We have the resources and talent to take ideas from script to screen. We take great pride in being able to complete a motion picture or TV show all under one roof. We are known for editing, color correction and sound design and mixing. We also have gotten great accolades for our opening title sequences for projects like Veronica Mars and iZombie.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a giant nerd. I spent a lot of time reading, writing and creating my own little movies and plays. I wasn’t into the outdoors or sports but grew up in a country where that dominates the narrative. I didn’t have a lot of support around me for a career in film and had to find it through books about filmmakers and eventually directors commentaries on LaserDiscs that I imported from California.
