Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Malolos.
Hi Robert, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Well, I got into photography when I was 14, my dad gave me his old Canon XT, and all throughout high school, I would take pictures of school events, sports games, and all that. When I graduated high school, I kind of put photography on the back burner so that I could focus on my studies in college.
Around 2019 however, I decided to get back into photography so I could have something to reduce my stress. I saved up for a new camera, got some new lenses, and learned how to do basic photoshop.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The journey to where I am now has definitely not been smooth. I ran into a lot of problems regarding self-doubt and lack of motivation which led to a few instances of creative burnout. I would spend days and sometimes weeks on end sitting around doing nothing, not wanting to edit my photos because my mind had fooled itself into thinking that the edits wouldn’t turn out well.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a photographer based in Los Angeles, California. I specialize in streetwear photography, however I also like to keep myself open to other concepts. I’ve done cosplay, cars, lifestyle, events, and even a little bit of boudoir.
Many people know me as the guy who’s everywhere in Southern California. Due to the fact that I have a lot of free time, I usually find myself going to car shows and other events in Los Angeles, Orange County, Ventura, etc.
I would say that I’m most proud of building up such a solid network of people who I can also call my friends. Not only do I enjoy spending time with them, I know for a fact that if needed, those people will step in to help. And I’d do the same.
Lastly, I honestly don’t know what sets me apart from others. I just see myself as another drop in an ocean of photographers here in LA.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I believe that kindness is the most essential. Without it, I wouldn’t have been able to build a solid network, and I also wouldn’t have been able to have that many photography-related opportunities given to me. Overall, it really does pay to be nice.
