Community Highlights: Meet Emma Campbell of Persuit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Campbell.

Emma, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am passionate about sustainability in the fashion industry, specifically second-hand shopping and circular economy initiatives. The inspiration to start Persuit came from personal experience when I thrifted and altered a pair of amazing men’s trousers. They looked great on my sister as well, who is the same size as me but a very different body shape. More than 15 million tons of used textile waste is generated in the US each year and just 1% of clothes manufactured are recycled into new clothes. I hope that Persuit will provide an easy, flattering, and stylish clothing option for women while solving some of the problems of immense waste which we see in the fashion industry today.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The concept for Persuit sat in the back of my mind for about a year before I acted on it. As a 24-year-old woman, starting a business was incredibly daunting and in some ways, I had no idea how to start. I couldn’t have gotten this far without the unyielding support and encouragement of friends and family members and invaluable insight and guidance from industry professionals.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Persuit aims to divert beautiful textiles from landfill by reimagining high-quality men’s vintage trousers for women. Each piece is individually sourced with an emphasis on natural materials (i.e., wool, cashmere, silk, etc.). Then the trousers are tailored to better suit a feminine silhouette while maintaining the functionality, comfort and timelessness of their original design.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Los Angeles is the capital of sustainable fashion in the United States. It is inspiring to see so many small brands, production companies, and content creators working closely to improve the fashion industry’s relationship to the environment and society, I have loved working on Persuit in Los Angeles because of the excitement around sustainable fashion and the ability to connect with a variety of people involved with the movement in different ways.
