Conversations with Frances Donison

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frances Donison.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
That’s an easy question, I have been baking since I was six years old. I was raised with a family of bakers, from my mom to my grandparents, then my Godmom. Baking I found was my happy place to think, pray, plan and relieve stress.

I started my business in 2009 and was in three businesses for a while. I began to attend events as a vendor and said one day I would open a brick and mortar one day. Well to date, I’m now in 2 more stores with a regular delivery schedule. I’m relaunching my business at the end of summer and plan on buying a truck or trailer so I can finally be with the community of those who love desserts. Baking and making ice cream is my passion and it’s what I do best. I have a huge, huge family support team, and without them I wouldn’t be as successful. They support, encourage and pray for me, and I for them in whatever they do. I look forward to being a business owner full time, which will happen later on this year.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The struggles were all within me, my job, my commitment and belief in myself. The need for delicious homemade desserts has always been there, but I didn’t always believe that I could make a living doing this. I have never had Help baking or preparing my desserts and at times, it became overwhelming, which had me thinking maybe this is not what I am supposed to do. Everyone else around me kept supporting me and my dreams saying I could do it and to believe in myself. I fought through it over the years and now I am ready to move forward with my business full time.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have been an educator for over 27 years and have loved every minute of it. Connections with students and parents have been my joy professionally.

What were you like growing up?
I was always a chatterbox, always very friendly speaking to anyone I saw. I always looked for ways to help those in need, whether special needs, homeless, etc. I love helping and connecting with others to make their world better. Their happiness brings me so much joy! I started baking and cooking dinner for my family at a young age so my mom wouldn’t have to do it when she got home from work. I also would get her clothes ironed for the next day, and comb my sister’s (Cassandra Johnson) hair, then my other sister’s hair. Whatever I could do to help out.
