Conversations with CASHFORGOLD

Today we’d like to introduce you to CASHFORGOLD .

Hi CASHFORGOLD , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been singing since I can remember. Born and raised in metro Detroit, I started to experiment with making electronic music in high school with a guy I met on MySpace, but it was difficult to keep the project going while we were in college so it naturally dissolved. I stopped singing for a while because I was very discouraged by not getting into any a cappella groups at Northwestern. I transferred from the theatre program into the film program my freshman year and double majored in philosophy. I was doing everything I could to not be an artist. It wasn’t until about a year post-grad that I realized music was the only thing I really wanted to do. In late 2016, I made a Soundcloud and instantly fell in love with the witch house/wave music scene. I wound up spending the majority of 2017-2019 in Berlin recording music with German producer Tim Schaufert. We put out two EPs together – Rebirth (2018) and Glass Houses (2019) along with several singles. I then returned to the states to begin crafting my first full-length album. In the past year, I’ve released several collaborations with UK-based producer Sidewalks and Skeletons, including music videos for singles “Queen” and “Eternal Rest”. Most recently, I put out a cover of The Weeknd’s “Save Your Tears” and will be releasing a video for it soon.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being away from my family and friends, in Berlin, for extended lengths of time was hard on me. I know it was worth it – I was able to fully disconnect from all distractions and focus on my project in a way I couldn’t have if I had been in the states. Yet, it was very isolating. Of course, the pandemic has also been an unexpected halt to momentum, but I’m sure everyone in the music industry can say that.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a songwriter/vocalist that creates dark, moody electronic music that falls somewhere between witch house, dream pop, and gritty electronica. One time an old friend sent me a video of her in her car listening to Sirius XM Chill and my song “Cycles” came on. I’m probably most proud of that.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Probably that I majored in (and am very passionate about) Philosophy and was very close to going to law school. I took the LSAT and everything.
