Today we’d like to introduce you to Zeh Monstro.
Hi Zeh, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Brazilian musician based in LA since 2014. I moved out here with my Brazilian band Name the Band. We had the chance to tour all over the country and record two albums here. While I wasn’t playing with NTB, I was working on songs that ended up being the beginning of my solo project that I released in October of 2020. This weird and difficult year was the perfect moment for me to debut LIBRA. The idea of this new project is me recording all instruments (drums, bass, guitars, synth and vocals and having a different female singer singing with me on each song. My first release was “FREAK SHOW” featuring my friend and amazing singer Lily Waters that with her unique voice took the song to another level. The response of this new indie pop debut was really good with amazing pictures by French photographer Larry Niehues. I decided to put up a band and go to Sir Tiger Studio in LA to record the song live. It was a challenge to make it safely amid a pandemic but it turned out amazing. The band for this production had Lina Anderberg on drums, Camila Cat on bass, Gabriel da Rosa on guitar and Isaac Plummer on Keys. Allan Wan did a great job shooting and editing it. I have just released my second single “FLAKEY TOWN” featuring amazing singer Elyse Cisek and on May 28th I am releasing a music video, also directed by Allan Wan. I am super excited for this new music video.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s always difficult to start a new band, especially now that live music is not happening. But also obstacles can be very inspiring and a fuel to create art. Also, Libra is just me and a different singer for every song, so I am in charge of everything. From the instruments, production, art cover, etc. I wanted this project to be coherent and make every little part of it connected. I’m very happy so far.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve been playing music my whole life. I had the chance to play in several bands and jump from drums to bass to guitar and sing. I also always love to compose so when I picture a song in my head, I already have the bass line, the guitar lick, the drumbeat, etc. I also always loved to connect the music with visuals. So images, the art cover, the wardrobe, the photos, everything has to be part of a package. Everything has to be connected.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite musical childhood memory was when I was around ten years old and went with my parents to their friend’s house for dinner. They were musicians and for the first time, I sat behind a drum kit and played. It was one of the most amazing moments in my music career. It just felt so natural. Luckily after a week, my father bought me a drum kit and it was when everything started.
