Conversations with Sara Keefe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Keefe.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was always a photographer before I even really knew it’s what I wanted to do. I loved my art classes in high school and was always amazed with fashion magazine ads (even collaging my bedroom walls with them). In 2013, I photographed my first wedding and knew that day this is what I wanted to do. The same year, I moved to Chicago to study photography at Columbia College Chicago. I focused most of my work and learning towards fashion photography. I was fortunate to work with some amazing female photographers (Kirsten Miccoli) and female fashion designs (Christina Karin) that really helped to guide my passion. My personal style grew to incorporate vibrant use of color and movement to help tell a story. Nearly four years ago, my man and I decided to move to the west coast! Here, my photography has returned to my original love of weddings. I love being able to blend my editorial style with wedding photography to create unique and aesthetically beautiful moments for all of my couples. I hope to continue my path of photographing people, whether it be in fashion or weddings.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Fashion photography has its downsides, especially as a young woman. The industry has grown so much over the last few years and has become much more inclusive. The perfect body image and over retouching was something I struggled to balance between my photography and own self-image. I’m so happy to see all people of all shapes and sizes being shared. Although we have a long way to go, it is definitely something that even the photographers struggle with.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a fashion and wedding photographer based in West LA. I balance the two by calling myself a lifestyle photographer. I specialize in creating vibrant images while creating a genuine connection with people. My passion is helping bring to life my client or couple’s vision. I love mixing my fashion and editorial training into my wedding and engagement photography.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I’m hoping this shift in the fashion photography industry is just the beginning! As much as I love retouching, I love real woman bodies! I hope the images we see continue to grow to represent each of us more realistically. As for weddings! COVID as really flipped the entire wedding industry on its head. Many couples are still opting for smaller more intimate style ceremonies. I love that couples are focusing on what matters (their love) versus stressing over all the frills and details. I’m getting the feeling this trend won’t be going away.
