Today we’d like to introduce you to Clara Mokri.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up around cameras. My father documented every aspect of my childhood from as early as I can remember. From his meticulous effort to turn my fifth birthday party into a professional-grade home video to his willingness to get in the ocean and photograph me at age seven when I learned to surf, his presence in my life with a camera, while inadvertently on his part, had a lasting impact on me. Until college, I never saw photography as anything more than a hobby. During my freshman year at Yale, I joined the Undergraduate Photography Society and enrolled in as many photo classes as I could.
Despite being a full-time student-athlete (I played basketball), I dedicated my limited free time to photography. The idea of photojournalism gradually became more of a serious contemplation. After college, I worked as an associate photo editor at Vice and then in the photo department at TIME Magazine. I enjoyed working behind the scenes, but I missed being the one in the field. This prompted me to apply to UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, where I am currently in my final semester of the documentary film program. Returning to school allowed me the time to pursue being a freelance photojournalist on the side, which is something I plan to continue doing full-time upon graduation in May.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No road is perfectly smooth, but I think that I’m adaptable and open-minded, which has allowed me to go with the flow for the most part.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a visual journalist. My work attempts to shed light on underreported communities and give them a voice to tell their own stories. I also enjoy underwater surf and adventure photography. It’s a good balance of fun and serious. That’s what it’s all about to me—living a balanced life.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I had a lot of energy; I was extremely active. I loved playing basketball and surfing. I still love both of those things immensely.
