Meet Omniscent Candle Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Omniscent Candle Company.

Established in 2020, our black-owned company creates its aromatherapy candles in house, by hand with quality in every jar. Members of Omniscent Candle Company include: Johnathan Hicks, Jaylan Hicks, Tyrrell Lemons, and Angel Duran. We all grew up in the same neighborhood and went to school together, so we’ve been friends for 15+ years. One thing we all had in common was the goal of being financially free, so whenever we got together we discussed how we can turn that goal into reality. One particular day we decided we wouldn’t go back home until we came up with a business plan so we grabbed some food and started brainstorming. We went down a long list of things we could do and items we could sell, and one of us jokingly said candles. As time went on and we discussed more, we started to get more logical with our ideas. Candles came back into the picture and we ended up sticking with it. Just to make sure we didn’t leave the meeting empty handed we ordered jars on the spot to make sure we went through with our plan. After that we had to come up with a company name. We know we wanted to come up with a catchy clever name, so we wanted it to have something to do with smell or scent, so we ended coming up with “Omniscent” Omni- means all, or of all things, and we want to provide everything you need in each and every candle.

Started in Compton, CA during June of COVID-19, we understood these turbulent times were affecting the community. Many were struggling just to get by. We wanted to create a candle company because we realized we cannot rely solely on one stream of income. We already come from low income families so we knew the odds were stacked against us. Despite our circumstances, we knew we had no choice but to persevere. This drive to create a better standard of living kept us motivated and confident throughout our life. Initially, we didn’t know anything about making candles. So we made sure to do all our research on materials needed to start. We started by watching YouTube videos on the candle-making process and starting a candle business. Once we got the overall start-up cost, we started to purchase everything else we needed. Once we got everything we needed, we started to come up with scent ideas and our IT guy (Tyrrell Lemons) handled all the tech and website details seamlessly. We are still learning and growing, but overall we started from the ground up and want to continue to improve and provide quality services for our customers.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road definitely hasn’t been smooth especially since we didn’t even know how to make candles when we started. After trial, error and experimenting we began to create a product that we actually liked & it’s has only improved from there. Some of the other obstacles we faced was figuring out the logistics of our company. The process of shipping candles out, keeping up with inventory, the chemistry behind making a candle and working with different schedules. However, as time progressed, all these things fell in place.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
One of the main things that sets us apart is the fact that we are all men of color. Initially when people hear about a candle business they usually don’t assume that men are behind it. I feel like this definitely makes us unique and stand out compared to other candle companies.

Another thing that sets us apart is the fact that also we sell personalized candles. One of our founders ended up making a very creative candle for his girlfriend for Valentine’s Day and it ended up going viral on Twitter with over 45k+ retweet’s and 280k+ likes! This resulted in us gaining over 600 followers in a single day. After this we knew we needed to capitalize off of this so we decided to give people the option of creating their own personalized candle. After launching 2 days after the viral tweet we began getting orders from all over the country and we even got several international orders! Initially when we started we didn’t expect for this to happen at all, but this has since been our best selling product. If anything sets us apart this definitely does. Our personalized candles has been used as anniversary gifts and someone even proposed to their significant other with our candle!

How do you define success?
Success to us is being financially free. Being able to spend quality time with the ones you love instead of spending most of life working missing out on priceless moments. Being able to create an example for those that come from our community and similar backgrounds. Being able to show kids that look like us that anything is possible. Success to us is being able to give something back to the community that cannot be bought with money.
