Today we’d like to introduce you to Helen Gordon.
Helen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I came out to LA over 20 years ago from New York to pursue a career in acting. A manager who represented kids saw me in a showcase and asked me to coach some of his clients. The very first client I coached for him booked a series regular on a show for NBC. I thought what a great way to make a living without waiting tables while I pursue my dream. After that my business took off and coaching kids took the focus. I coached a lot of kids who had success, and word of mouth started getting out. Agents and managers started referring their clients to me. Parents started telling other parents about me. I pride myself on the fact that I can coach 10 kids for the same role and they will all be slightly different because I am able to show them how to put themselves in the character. I do not try to create actor robots, but rather interesting, real actors who are not afraid to have fun and be themselves. Nickelodeon heard about me and for a time I coached on set for them. I was the on-set acting coach for their hit TV show, The Haunted Hathaways (50 episodes) as well as other Nickelodeon projects. Currently I am focused on teaching classes at my studio and promoting Audition Superhero, the online classes that I recently launched for young actors all over the world who cannot come to a live class.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest challenge is dealing with the unrealistic expectations of some parents or kids who think that after 6 or 8 classes they will get on a hit TV show. It takes time, hard work and dedication. Rico Rodriguez, one of my most successful students came to class 3 times a week for 3 years. He didn’t just come to class for 6 weeks and walk onto the set of Modern Family. It took time. He did have wins along the way. He booked commercials, co-stars, and guest stars… and then he got Modern Family. The other challenge is having kids come to class whose objective is to be famous. They don’t necessarily want to do the work, they just want to be famous.
We’d love to hear more about your business.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is the best place for a business like mine because this is where people come to be on television and in the movies.
