Today we’d like to introduce you to Nanauwe.
Hi Nanauwe, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am an Indigenous artist from the island of Nôepe, born in the year 2000. I was given the name Nanauwe within which I was given my purpose; my name meaning Freedom. I am part of the Wôpanâak tribe, also known as the People of the First Light. Growing up, I had a very connective and intuitive relationship with nature because I was raised in a tipi in the woods on my ancestral land. My roots were directly beneath my feet as a child, and it has made me who I am today. My ancestors held ceremony on this land, they tended to this land, my ancestors were giving to and receiving from this land. I have been inspired since I was a baby, always writing songs and singing, drawing from the inspirations of nature and Indigenous ways. I started taking voice and piano lessons at the age of 12, and left home at age 14 to enrich my high school education as a musician, and attended Walnut Hill School for the Arts, MA, and Idyllwild Arts Academy, CA. I started gigging at the age of 14, playing with my older brother and his band, Other Chyld.
After graduating from Idyllwild Arts Academy, I decided to go to college at Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA, to continue my musical education. I knew that I wanted to be an independent artist from the beginning and when I moved to Hollywood, I learned how to produce, engineer, and started my own LLC. I believe in the power of an individual, their gifts and visions, and I believe everyone has a purpose on this earth. I always knew that I would have to take my purpose into my own hands, so I could create something that would still be here after I passed on, something for generations to come. I am an Embodiment of Creation, Mama Earth, Divine Feminine, Balance, Spirit, Love and Soul coming to share my Essence Through Music and the Earth. I channel Ancient Wisdom from my Ancestors and Creation to send Vibrations Everywhere and to Everything.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Growing up in the tipi was the most incredible experience, but it wasn’t always easy. The reason why we moved into the tipi was because we didn’t have the money to rent a house. We would have to build a fire every time we wanted to cook a meal and keep the fire going all night because that’s how we kept warm. The island where I’m from is on the East Coast where we have long and cold winters, we didn’t have hot water so we would have to run outside in the snow, shower with the hose, and run back inside huddling up by the fire. My upbringing also made me very different from the other kids my age, I never fit in and that also made me feel alone. I was bullied and became depressed around 8th grade, but finding music and connecting to nature helped me grow through all of my struggles. I knew what I was meant to do from a very young age and I remain very focused on my music, community, mama earth, and all of my visions.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a singer, rapper, writer, producer, pianist, engineer, and entrepreneur, and I have a production company called Freedom Water Music. I love to eat as naturally as possible, so I’m an alkaline chef (Dr. Sebi approved). I can also survive in the woods alone, I can build fires, shelters, I know how to forage for food and water, carve, cook over an open fire, I can identify birds, bird calls, tracks, and many different plants. I love to dance, and draw, and express myself through all art forms.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
People can support me by connecting back to nature and spreading peace and balance. People can support me by truly fully loving themselves, growing their own personal gifts, and loving their community. People can support me by caring for and giving back to the Earth which gives to us endlessly without ever asking. People can support me by listening to my music (which is out on all platforms) that speaks to everything that I am and stand for. People can also me on add me on any or all social media to join my journey and see what’s next. I love collaboration, and community coming together is one of the most important things to me.
