Today we’d like to introduce you to Kymistry.
Hi Kymistry, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I was lucky to be surrounded by music. My cousins and I would practice singing, dancing, and performing just for fun or for our aunties and uncles. It was naturally an outlet for us emotionally, spiritually, mentally, and physically. I started writing when I met my friend, Darlyn, in college. We formed a hip hop/R&B band together after sharing our love of Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu. Later on, I joined another band that was punk experimental where I got to explore a more improvisational style. Music has taught me so much and continues to challenge and reveal new things for me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Haha… the road had some bumps in it for sure, as most do. It took me a lot of time to figure out what I’m doing and what my role is in the world we live in and the world I’m living for. To be honest, I still am learning that role every day, but I feel so thankful to have started making music again last year after a 6-year hiatus. It’s a gift that has given me so many new ways of connecting with others recently, with long-time friends, people I haven’t connected with in years, complete strangers turned acquaintances, and beyond. There are so many variables, internal and external, that can make the road a complex but worthwhile one.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
For the very first time, I started releasing music as a solo artist this year which has a contemplative yet energizing contemporary R&B neo-soul sound. Hands down, I’m most proud of the relationships I have in my life. And, just like my music, I tend to be very introspective. I think both those qualities are what drive me to grow and be better than who I was yesterday.
What were you like growing up?
I was the kind of kid who could entertain themselves easily. I had a lot of interests like visual arts, crafts, reading, playing sports, and science. I especially loved visual arts like painting, drawing, and sculpture. As a kid, I used to romanticize being a beret-wearing, off-the-beaten-path-type artist holding one of those paint tray palettes with the thumb hole. I always wanted that as a kid… haha. Funny enough, I can’t say I realistically fantasized about myself being a musician when I was younger.
