Today we’d like to introduce you to Nailah Howze.
Hi Nailah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I’m a military child, so I lived in North Carolina for about seven years at one point in my life. I ended up joining military myself when I turned 18 years old and served for the Air Force for four years, stationed in South Korea. Living in another country so far from home gave me a whole new perspective on life and it inspired me to document the entire process, which is what led me to photography. I started out just photographing my friends and local clients, and after six years, I am now working with globally-recognized clients such as Nike, Adidas, Puma and more.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, particularly as a Black woman. I know my own potential but it has been challenging to make others recognize my potential. It wasn’t until recently that I started to feel seen and start being able to support other women on their journeys.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Most people know me as a photographer but I’m much more than that. I’ve had my hands in a lot of different things, from model casting to directing short films to co-planning a major event series called Face2Face. There isn’t a specific project that I’m most proud of – I’m proud of all my work. What I’m most proud of is my courage to take on this journey as a creative, it was a major leap of faith. I confront all challenges head-on and I think that’s what sets me apart from others, too.
