Meet Caitlin Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin Hill.

Hi Caitlin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I moved to Atlanta from my small hometown in South GA in 2018 to become a hairdresser. I was an apprentice for almost two years and towards the end, I knew that wasn’t what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. But I always liked photo/video. I was going to concerts every other night so I did my research to find out how I could gain photo passes. I was at small bar venues in ATL every other night to get enough photos for a portfolio that would gain me access to shows and it worked. But then the unpredictable happened.

Fast forward to when Covid-19 shut the world down, I was restless and impatient with no adventure in my life so I packed up my Jeep and hit Route 66 to California. I had no job and no plans but I did have extremely high expectations for myself. Even during a global pandemic.

I’ve worked as a videographer/photographer at two different studios. I shoot live sessions, studio music videos, documentaries of recording processes, photoshoots, etc. Even in these insane times I’ve met so many amazing artists that became friends. I cannot wait to see where the next few years take us.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest struggle for me was at the beginning but still plays a role now. It was knowing that I truly sucked at what I was trying to do. It was challenging but I had the courage to suck until I got better. And I still look at it like that everyday, to be more efficient at my craft than I was the day before. I stay at a constant struggle of wanting to be the best but having so much I could still learn.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in artistic content . I think that’s the best way to sum up what I do. Concert/portrait photography was my main gig in Atlanta. But since moving to Los Angeles, I’ve shifted more into capturing all art forms. I use my camera to document the magic I see in people. Rather that’s capturing a mural being painted, a drum solo or catching break dancers behind a skyline of LA. The look I see on someone’s face after they see themselves or their work through my vision is so rewarding. There’s nothing like it.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I like the best about LA is you are surrounded by creatives. On the positive side of that, your chances of meeting someone who sees talent in you and could change your life is higher than most places. On the negative side, that’s what also makes LA so daunting. EVERYONE is out for relatively the same thing. There is more creative competition here than anywhere else. But the possibilities here are endless as long as you can be patient, work hard, and don’t let competition scare you. And most importantly, never give up the dream.
