Today we’d like to introduce you to Reut “Rue” Golan.
Hi Reut “Rue”, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am 26 years old and was born and raised in Israel in a city called Haifa. After high school, I served in the Israeli Navy for three years as an operational officer. The military was an amazing experience for me. You learn a lot about life through the challenges you are faced with. Your whole perspective about life is changing, you learn what’s important and what is not. I became a better person, more mature, respectful and responsible towards myself and towards the people around me. After serving my time in the military, I was offered a position in the Israeli embassy in Washington DC. I left everything I’ve had in Israel and started over. It was my first time in the US. I worked in DC for two years until I decided, in 2018 it was time to move to LA to be closer to achieving my dreams.
I started working for the Israeli consulate in Los Angeles while also going to school for “music business” in UCLA. Ever since I was a little kid, I had an extreme passion for the entertainment business, I dreamed of being a big Hollywood producer. In high school, I took extra classes and I produced, filmed and shot two of my own documentaries. I knew I was gonna end up in LA, doing something that had to do with that. I just had to trust the time and the process. I was always the “fan” girl. Some people used to make fun of me because I always had those crazy big ideas and dreams for myself, but I didn’t really mind it, it was kinda funny to me and pushed me even more, today I am in the exact place I said I was going to be, and I know it is just the beginning for me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Moving to LA wasn’t easy at the beginning to say at least. I started my adulthood in the US so everything I knew and know started in Washington DC, as a 21 years old girl, I left a relationship, I left my brother and my work to come to LA to be by myself, knowing absolutely no one, only cause I knew it was the right thing for me to do, also, it is not been easy to live so far away from home, I am a person who adapts pretty quickly and I am fine with not seeing people for a longer period of time, but sometimes during holidays and watching my family growing and my nephews all grown up without me seeing them can be a little tough – I usually go to visit once every year, now with covid I haven’t been for almost two years.
So now looking back, I’ve learned so much about myself who I am and who I want to become.
When Covid hit, everyone went through some hard time, it felt like time stopped, but when more and more time passed and we realized nothing is going to change soon, I realized that I have had enough of my 8-5 job, and it was time for me to start out there and grow my career in Los Angeles. covid actually gave me time to think with myself, help me understand better how to grow my career and how to continue from here. I figured that now when not much is happening people have a lot of extra time, so I decided to start reaching out to people from the entertainment industry. I just looked up entertainment people that I followed and looked up to, mostly reached out for advice and hopefully an opportunity to be able to help them with any upcoming projects. All voluntarily. I was very lucky and after a short period of four months into covid, I started an internship with a big music company, I learned and am still learning so much about the industry. In the meantime, I am also managing my friend, her name is Noa, she is an actress, songwriter and a musician.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In the consulate, I am the person in charge of producing all of the consulates events with other organizations and communities, from Hollywood events to Jewish community events and much more. Once Covid hit, the nature of work has changed, most of our events are being held via Zoom at the moment. One project that I am very proud I got to produce was the mural that is painted on the front of Hollywood high school. The Consulate General of Israel, Hollywood High School, the LAPD, the City of Los Angeles and two non-profit arts organizations came together to celebrate the diversity of the City and to bring its many communities together. Well-known graffiti artist Don Rimx painted a mural that scales the entire west side of the school. Every day, hundreds of people pass by to see this amazing artwork.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Currently, I’m listening to the podcast by Adam Elmakias & Neil Westfal – “Don’t shit on the bus” This podcast is teaching you how to be a great tour manager and basically how to survive on tour. It gave me a lot of tips and ideas. In general, it teaches you that you really just need to be a nice person 🙂 so I would recommend it for anyone who really just wants to be a good person! “The power of your subconscious mind” by Joseph Murphy – this one has taught me a lot on how to deal with mental health and how it is all in our mind- we can achieve anything we want if we are just open to try. “The list” – that book is a Hebrew book but I know you can also get the English version of it. The author is Yuval Abramovitz. Basically, this one says you create your own reality, I’ve started doing my own lists ever since reading this book and it gave me a lot of inspiration and power to succeed-his method proved itself working in my case.
