Today we’d like to introduce you to Lily Williams.
Hi Lily, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a singer and songwriter from London. I’ve been writing songs for over ten years and have loved collaborating with insanely talented musicians from all around the world who I now get to call my best friends! I recently graduated from Berklee College of Music and have been releasing music for the past couple of years, influenced by the likes of Nina Nesbitt, JP Saxe, Bruno Major and Norah Jones. I spent the past year split between sessions in Norway and London and was lucky enough to be mentored by the likes of Fred Ball, Emily Warren and Sarah Hudson. Earlier this year, I secured my first official songwriting credit with K-391 and RØRY called “Aurora” and after a crazy ten months of zoom sessions and songwriting camps such as “SheWrites”, I’m excited to land more cuts in 2021 and hopefully have some more in person sessions!
A highlight of the year was winning Unsigned Only’s POP/TOP 40 category with my unreleased song PUNCHING, it’s a competition I’ve been following for a couple of years now so I was so shocked and grateful to win an award! Another highlight of last year was my release with Euan Allison “Lego Bricks” which has reached over 1 million streams on Spotify. For the first time, my music was featured in a large number of Spotify editorial playlists, among them The Most Beautiful Songs in the World, Easy, NMF Deutschland, NMF Switzerland and others. I am so grateful for every single listener and supporter of my music and am so excited to release more this year. In fact, my next single is coming out March 5th! Keep your eyes peeled 🙂
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think as an independent artist there are always so many struggles! You have to have a vision for every part of your artistry and hustle like crazy to make things happen. There is also so much room for self-doubt and comparison which is something I am fighting so hard against. I think the best advice I could give myself and other independent artists is that every voice is unique, you have something to say so say it! Don’t try to copy someone else, be true to your story and your voice! I am trying to do this and to celebrate other’s victories without letting it make me feel bad about myself. It is 100% a journey, but having a great team around me as well as supportive friends and family keeps my head straight and reminds me why I do it despite the struggles!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an artist and a songwriter. I think I am most known for my lyrics, I love words and books and I think songs have such a beautiful way of telling stories. I also am classically trained pianist so I love bringing in some interesting chords and ideas into the harmony of pop writing. Meeting people during sessions and telling their stories as well as my own is so fun and I feel so lucky that I get to do it!
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think I am a risk taker! Being a creative is risky in every regard, it’s such an unstable and uncontrollable path! I’ve been learning to follow my gut and trust the process. The biggest risk I recently took was packing up and moving to LA from London. I’d been waiting for a while to come and as soon as I got the opportunity to I jumped at it. If you wait for perfect timing or for everything to line up, you will be waiting forever! Big steps never feel perfect, they are always scary, but I think that doing things that scare us is a part of living and it always pays off. I’m excited for all the LA holds!!
