Life & Work with Chris Lim

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Lim.

Hi Chris, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up playing all sorts of card games with my friends and family. I specifically love strategy games, especially games that forces players to come up with creative methods to win. As I got older, I started entering tournaments in multiple card games. I always noticed that certain cards always tend to be overpowered, making the game unbalance and not fun. I’ve always wanted to create a game that not only is really fun but is also balanced and requires critical thinking with a little bit of luck involved. With all the madness and sadness going around, I thought people might enjoy a game based on the current events. Finding humor in a difficult situation can ease tension and help bring people together. I had so much fun designing and playing this game and with your support, I hope to share it with people going through these difficult times.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it definitely has not been smooth. All the skills required to take something from an idea to become a physical product was all new to me. My roommates and I played hundreds of test games and there have been at least five different versions of the game until I finally found the perfect balance. It took a lot of work not only from myself but also from all of our friends, families and coworkers who also love playing card/board games. Additionally, it’s been super hard to coordinate with overseas manufacturers due to the actual COVID-19 pandemic that are board game is based on. Luckily, after contacting multiple manufacturers, we finally found one that we liked.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a Cal Poly Pomona graduate currently working as a Mechanical Engineer designing valves. At heart, I’m just a geeky nerd that loves to play games.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
My roommates have been a big help. Since they’re the only group of people I can hang out with on the weekends, they were the first people to playtest the first version of the game. My coworkers and families also played a big role. They were first ones who had to learn how to play games without any physical help. This allowed us to have a better perspective on how to make the game easier to understand for new players. Lastly, my high-school friend helped me with the marketing. Without her, I would not have known how to share my creation with everyone.
