Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Nicole.
Hi Alicia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My fascination with music started on the piano when I was seven. At that time, I would hide away by myself and write songs over piano melodies I came up with. I was so shy back then that I never really shared my love for singing until after I graduated high school. That’s when I became interested in music production and performing. I started performing in 2016 and released a collaborative album with producer Pxncho called “A.M.ZOL Part 1.”
Some of my first shows were performing this album around my hometown San Diego. After a few years of networking and performing, in 2019 I was inspired to move to L.A. to submerge myself into the industry. In 2019, I also released my first reggaetón single called “Waiting on You.” Recorded at Good Vibez Studios, I tapped into my roots and mixed Spanish and English lyrics throughout the song. I wrote this song about no longer wanting to wait on someone to feel the same way as you. The next single I released, in July 2020, is called “Bleeding Hearts.” This is a pop project I wrote about past relationships, breakups, and finding empowerment through those situations. Empowerment and reclaiming my power are common themes I like to put in my songs and one I incorporated into my most recent single, “Out of My Body.” I wanted this one to feel very current so it has a R&B Pop vibe to it. It’s about letting go of situations that no longer serve us, whether that be with family, friends, or a romantic relationship. Along the way, I decided to pursue a degree in Electronic Music Production and Sound Design through the Berklee College of Music online program in 2018. With this degree, I hope to achieve my goal to create scores and design sounds for movies.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Every road has bumps in it. In the past, I’ve dealt with creative blocks and self-doubt but faced most challenges with my health. In 2013, I found myself in the hospital far too much trying to figure out the root of my stomach issues. I couldn’t hold any food down and my weight fell from 110 – 86 lbs. It was scary and at 19, I was at risk for having heart attacks because the chemicals in my body were so depleted. It took multiple tests to come to the conclusion that I have G.E.R.D. which is a reflux disease. During this time, I turned to music to help me heal. It sounds cliché but music really did save my life, it brought me out of a dark time and gave me purpose.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m first and foremost an artist. Creating something from nothing drives me. When I see a blank canvas, I see a new opportunity to share my story and paint my emotions through different sonic palettes. That’s what I try to do every time I write a new song, share a glimpse into a moment of my life. Honestly, that’s my goal with music, to recreate the feeling of belonging I would get listening to an artist talk about things I was going through too. My voice is what I’m known for and it’s funny because the first reaction I usually get when someone hears me sing is, “Wow, how does that voice come out of this little body.” I’m small but my voice is sultry and powerful. Learning how to produce music is an achievement I’m most proud of. I used to dream of having the skills to make a song and now I’m actually doing it and bringing my vision to life. I think being detail-oriented sets me apart, I’m not only an artist but a businesswoman.
What matters most to you?
Always speaking my truth. It’s easy to get caught up in the appearance of things and putting our best selves forward which is great! Unless you’re having a hard time and you feel like you can’t be honest about it. That’s why speaking up even when it feels uncomfortable is so important to me, someone else could be experiencing the same thing.
