Daily Inspiration: Meet Alphonso Walker Jr.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alphonso Walker Jr.

Hi Alphonso, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began acting as a child, doing small plays in church (i.e., retelling/ re-enacting birth of Jesus). It wasn’t until my college days where I co-founded a Drama club on campus of a predominantly white institution. Here is where I lead in plays such as August Wilson’s FENCES & Lorraine Hansberry’s A RAISIN IN THE SUN. By the time my senior year came – I wrote, directed & starred in my own show. That’s when I knew this would be my career.

I started in college as a Pre-Med major and minored in Psychology. By the time graduation came, I switched to Psychology as my major with a Theatre minor. After graduation, I got my feet wet doing local theatre while mentoring at youth risk. Afterwards, I relocated to NYC studying theatre/acting full time. PRESENT DAY I am now a freelance full-time artist who’s seeking proper representation.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road, but my perseverance is what allows me to continue pushing forward. I have come too far from where I started to give up now. Money and the financial aspects of the business has been a struggle. There were times I didn’t have enough money to print out my headshots – let alone commute to my auditions. Getting into major rooms without proper representation has also been a struggle. I find ways to navigate around this by doing research and finding new ways to reach people – also NETWORKING has been huge for me. Also, living in NYC it is expensive and bills must be paid so sometimes I’m not able to see my family on the holidays which could be lonely and un-motivating.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a classically trained Artist for the TV – FILM & STAGE. I started in the theatre and now breaking into more film & tv. I am an advocate for social injustice and equality. Specializing in motivating and speaking life into others on the journey of life. I am known for spreading joy, laughter and being a positive person. I am most proud of the work I have put into my journey and the signs from God that I am on the right path. What sets me apart from others is that I will not give up and will continue to do the work because it’s what makes me feel most alive.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
People can work with me, collaborate and/or support me by simply reaching out to me. I am amicable and open to meeting new creatives with drive. I am on Instagram: @AWALKERJR ClubHouse: Alphonso Walker Jr. Reach out!
