Check Out Rozay’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rozay.

Hi Rozay, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was always in love with music and art even as a young child. I grew up in Montego Bay which is a small vacation town in Jamaica. Growing up in a Jamaican-American household, I had access to a vast array of music and the diversity of it inspired me. At the age of 17, I moved to Shanghai where I was introduced to a whole new world and a whole new culture of people who had a strong interest in the Dancehall & Hip Hop culture and music but not much access to it. It was then that I decided to become a DJ and share my culture and love for music with the people there.

I began curating events and touring china, while doing so I was introduced to Afrobeat and the “Afro-Caribbean” sound and instantly fell in love. I made it my mission to spread the good vibes and culture with as many people as I could. And so began a journey that eventually led me to LA. Once arriving in LA, I was immediately inspired by the vast multitude of cultures and talented people I instantly felt right at home. In my time here, I’ve played some of the hottest Afro-Caribbean events and curated some of my own including Bad Gyal LA and Rude Party LA. I also collaborated on events like the party MoreTings and many others. It has been a really enjoyable experience so far!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I wouldn’t say it has been a smooth road, but every so-called problem I encountered definitely led me in the right direction of where I needed to be.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Dj and curator. Out of everything I’ve done and worked on thus far I’m most grateful for Bad Gyal La and what it has evolved into. I created Bad Gyal LA to be a safe space for women to release their negative energy and share their love for Afro-Caribbean music and culture. Some of the baddest gyals in LA show up to share the good vibes and the fellas come thru in hopes to get lucky and find their own Bad Gyal. All in all, it’s a night of good music, good times, and an expression of culture! The message has always been about celebrating women and female empowerment. To encourage women to be sexy, confident, intelligent, and most importantly proud of where they come from! I hope to further expand this in 2021 as covid lifts up.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Since the Covid-19 Crisis, I have shifted focus completely and embraced the fashion side of my brand BAD GYAL LA. So far, we have some really dope merch including hats, bikinis, and more that will have any girl feeling like the Baddest B on the block! All available to order at www.badgyala.com.
