Daily Inspiration: Meet Andrew Levin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Levin.

Hi Andrew, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m Andrew and I’m the vocalist/guitarist of the LA rock band The Drives. I have been playing music my entire life and moved to New York City after high school. I lived there for four years until moving to Los Angeles where I started my band. We’ve been playing together since 2017 and all three of us now live in Highland Park together.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Well pursuing music can definitely be a struggle for a million different reasons but the hardest thing I’ve had to deal with would be my struggles with OCD. I’ve been dealing with OCD for most of life and it’s a constant struggle. I’ve started opening up and writing more about OCD in the past few years which has been a really nice outlet for me. Talking about my struggles with mental health has really helped me overall.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Well in the band, I am a songwriter. Most of the songs we record start with something I have written. Usually, I’ll meet with Casey and we will finish writing the song together. Then we go into the studio with Geo and start tracking all the different parts. I am most proud of our newest song coming out at the end of January. We recorded it last year before the pandemic and are finally releasing it this month.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I love movies so I am always watching movies. But I also love books and podcasts. My favorite podcast right now is Throughline by NPR. It’s amazing. They basically take a current event that the world is talking about and explain it to you with a history lesson about that topic. So you get all the history of why whatever happening is happening.
