Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Pinson.
Hi Jonathan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My love for drums started at the age of two, hearing my mother’s choir in church, I was always in admiration of the drummer would always study him. I graduated from Hamilton High School and graduated Berklee College of Music on a full Scholarship. I was accepted in Thelonious Monk Institute Master’s program (now renamed the Herbie Hancock Institute) that’s apart of UCLA. While I was still studying in the program, I was asked to tour in both Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorters band. This allowed me to be a sought after drummer and was honored to work (tour, record or both) with many amazing musicians such as Terrace Martin, Seal, Kamasi Washington, Mark Turner, Braxton Cook, Marquis Hill, Moses Sumney and Gilad Hekselman.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was not a smooth road for me, I didn’t get accepted in my high school band after auditioning three times. Despite there reasons for it, I knew I had to believe in myself and push forward to receive the knowledge I needed to excel, I’m super grateful for the Colburn School of performing arts and my teachers Jerry Kalaf and Lee Seecard for the many lessons that have been a blessing to me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
You gotta have an open mind, always be willing to learn, embrace the moment and most of all have fun. This has been my mantra and has allowed me to have the experiences I’ve had. What I believe I’m most proud of is that I’m using my abilities as a musician/ artist to bring joy and heal people’s hearts through music. I believe what sets me apart is that voice as a drummer has been displayed in many different genres of music. I’ve been blessed to tour and learn from Jazz Legends Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, Pop legend Seal, Songwriting sensation Moses Sumney, tour and recorded with Hip Hop legend Terrace Martin and Jazz/R&B sensation Braxton Cook. These experiences have also allowed my start my own band Boom Clap a mixtures of Jazz, Rock and Hip Hop.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
