Meet Luciana Colucci

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luciana Colucci.

Hi Luciana, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I love working as an actress and model. Both of my parents are voice over directors and actors, so I became a voiceover actress at eleven years old. Being a Pasadena Waldorf School Alumni, art was part of our curriculum and anything else you can think of regarding art; acting, singing, dancing, music, painting, etc. After graduating from PWS, I got accepted at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts and studied there for two years.

Now I am a freelance actor, model and do voiceovers on the side. I think one of the things that really inspired me as a child was watching my parents do what they love every day and pursue it. In other words, it helped me take control of my life without being afraid of what’s to come and what will be. Looking back to how I started and where I am now, I do have to say that it wasn’t easy, but not impossible. As an artist, you have to be patient, have your feet well rooted on the ground, be bold, take action and love what you do.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I started acting professionally, I faced a couple of challenges that I think many faces or will face when becoming an actor, model, or even an artist. One of the many struggles was having a sufficient income for classes, headshots, marketing, demo reels, voice-over demo, union initiation fees, and other professional expenses that start adding up. Another one would be getting rejected for something other than acting. In other words, if I lose a role or an opportunity with a modeling gig because I’m 5’4,” I can’t really do anything about that. You just have to accept that you aren’t that type they are looking for and keep working hard.

Regarding obstacles, having to submit to agencies, looking for an agent, and sending emails can be hard and frustrating sometimes because some will answer and some won’t. But that doesn’t mean you aren’t good enough, it just means you have to be really determined and persevere until someone is willing to take on that journey with you. Last but not least, one of my biggest challenges was letting go of what I thought my career should be and not be so hard on myself. Everyone has their own path, dreams, and ambitions and you should stick with what you want. It’s your career and at the end of the day, you decide.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an actress, a dreamer, and a go-getter. I am a performer who loves to tell stories and be apart of projects that contain positive messages for humanity. Messages of love and light. I am originally known as an actress in theatre, voice-over, television, and film. I’ve done a lot of theatres since I was a child because my parents performed a lot of plays during my childhood. They would rent out a place and perform for several communities in different parts of Los Angeles. This is definitely one of the things that influenced my love for acting and why I wanted to pursue it. I also started in a film called Morita La Hija de Jesus in 2008, I was in a kids show, I’ve done a couple of commercials, voice acting like The Bold & The Beautiful, Cops, Disney Junior, Jane The Virgin, among others.

I basically grew up in the industry, surrounded by other artists for the majority of the time. Being an actor for me is being able to understand human characteristics such as human existence, birth, growth, emotions, aspiration, conflict, morality, etc. In a sense, I’m gifted in a way because I can be very emotional and sensitive towards others, be able to observe humanity and understand why people do what they do. I honestly can’t think of anything else more fulfilling. During the process of becoming an actor, you get to know so many things about yourself, learn different skills, how to write characters bios, write about the different plays you’ve watched, understand the different perspectives from each actor’s point of view, etc.

But most importantly, what drives you as an actor. I am so proud of how far I’ve come and how well rooted my feet are. In the world of Hollywood, you have to be grounded and the ability to have a sense of balance with your dreams, goals, and actions. In other words, don’t lose yourself and don’t have your head in the clouds. Open your eyes to reality! While I realize there are many actors with similar paths, the one thing that uniquely sets me apart from others is knowing that I’m not pursuing my career to become famous. I do it because the work itself fills me. I will never know when fame will come, and if it does, I won’t know when or for how long. From an actor to other young actors like myself, if you wake up every day and really love what you do, it certainly sustains you for a lifetime.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Well, there are many things you learn as an actor, but one of the most important lessons I have learned is to empathize with my feelings. The ability to understand, interpret, experience my own emotional place and be able to use that when playing a character. In fact, I feel that acting increases our level of empathy. We have the opportunity to experience and see life from a different perspective. It allows me (actor) to see the character that I play with the different circumstances that characterize my character’s life, and without this, the character cannot really be brought to life.
