Rising Stars: Meet Dana Nelson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Nelson.

Hi Dana, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Well, it started off 11 years ago as just taking a fun cake decorating class at Michael’s craft store with my mother lol I figured it would be something fun to do with her and spend some quality time with her, and comes to find out, I really enjoyed it.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
When I first started getting orders, it was definitely not easy because I was just starting and didn’t know what I was doing but people believed that I could do… I’ve had customers cancel their orders after I made the cake… because I didn’t know to take a deposit before but I learned real fast to always take a deposit, I’ve also had a customer tell me they didn’t like that cake and my feelings were crushed because I worked so hard on their cake and after the party the customer texted and said the cake was a hit and everyone enjoyed it so that made me feel a little better.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I currently work a full-time job at a television/media company in the Los Angeles area as an accounting clerk and after work, I usually come home and plan out my cake orders for the weekend. At the moment, I have included homemade ice cream and they seem to love it along with my cheesecakes. I’m most proud of seeing the smiles on people’s faces when I walk in with their cake or just people walking by and they stop me to just see the cake. I’m also proud that this is something that I didn’t give up on… its a lot of work a lot of late night and early mornings but I wouldn’t change it for anything.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is you can’t satisfy everyone. As long as I do my part to the best of my ability, you’ve done your job.
