Meet Alana Sussan of a local furniture upholstery shop in Woodland Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alana Sussan.

Alana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Before opening Alana Alegra Interiors, I was at the point in my life where I really wanted to branch out and do my own thing. I had always wanted to become a business owner but I was waiting for the right time and opportunity. I grew up with my father in the upholstery business. My father was very successful and I was lucky enough to have his help when starting my own. I myself did not have the experience but I was full of excitement and learned as I went along. That was 11 years ago! Throughout the years we have done work for hotels, interior designers and residential customers. I feel so grateful to have such wonderful clients and to have made some friends along the way.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I was lucky to have low overhead when I started because it took a few years to get the business on its feet. It’s not always smooth but I don’t think there is any business that is easy all the time. We have busy seasons and slow seasons and it took a while to learn how to balance. Custom upholstery has its own niche. The customizable aspect of the service and the fact that the furniture is produced or refurbished by old school expert upholsterers is what makes each piece special and one of a kind. However, it’s tough to market to the mainstream public because our services are considered to be more of a luxury.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Alana Alegra Interiors – what should we know?
Alana Alegra Interiors specializes in custom upholstery. I always say we do anything that involves the use of upholstery fabrics.

Services:
Custom Upholstered Furniture – we build it from scratch! With your help we custom design it for you.
Re-Upholstery – We take your old furniture piece and make it brand new. A lot of people bring in antiques, furniture that has meaning to them or just furniture that they love and want to update.
Custom cushions or pillows. For example, outdoor cushions are very popular or cushions that are unique in shape or size.
Wall upholstery or upholstered panels.
Refilling of furniture cushions.

We are known for:
Extensive fabric library with beautiful choices.
Top of the line in quality, materials and labor.
Our upholsters are experts in the field with over 40 years of skilled craftsmanship.
Customer service & personal experience with clients.
Our workmanship is guaranteed.

I think what sets us apart from others is mostly the personal attention each customer will receive. I myself as the owner will meet with each and every customer to take their project from start to completion. We are a custom shop – not a factory. Therefore, the experience is very individualized. A lot of the jobs are unique so there is a lot of communication between us and the clients. We are a small business and family operated. We pride ourselves on running an honest business that provides professional service with that extra special touch!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
It’s hard to pick just one. For us I would say the integrity of the business and the relationship we build with our clients. When our clients hire us, they are trusting us to be fair and they also need to feel comfortable that our upholsterers will bring their vision to life. Happy customers are essential to grow our business!
