Hi Katie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My husband and I bought our first home in July 2017 and I started taking pictures of it and posting them on Instagram. Before I knew it, I started to gain traction and get reposts and shares and people really liked my decor! It happened very unexpectedly and organically that I fell into become a home decor influencer. I love being creative in any capacity and loved having a medium that I had full control over. In the past, I pursued music but was always reliant on a band or producer or additional parties to work. I was thrilled to find that being creative through design was just as fulfilling for me and I could do it as often as I liked! I put in a lot of time and effort into photographing my space, changing the decor often and engaging with my audience on Instagram. It was a full-time second job for me before it became lucrative! It doesn’t happen overnight and it is a lot of work but it’s also a lot of fun!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has been fairly smooth for me and I was pretty lucky to get some great partnerships with large companies very early on. My growth has been fairly steady and consistent but I have also been consistently putting in about 8-10 hours a day for three years. I’ve found that consistency is key. I post every day and try to keep things fresh and interesting. There are periods where growth is slower and periods where you seem to be the most popular and it all balances out so I try to take it all in stride.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an interior designer and a home decor influencer on Instagram. I’m known for my love of pastels and post-modern and vintage influences. People who gravitate to me tend to love color and unique spaces. I think outside of the box. I don’t do what everyone else is doing just because it’s trendy. I do keep up with trends, but I like to be the one creating them, not following them. I put my own spin on what’s current and make it weird and fun. I love weird. Weird is so much cooler than boring. My proudest home accomplishment is my bathroom. I DIYed the floor tile by hand painting the stencil to mimic tile and it came out beautifully! I also wallpapered and painted the walls. Another thing that I’m proud of is when I help a client to actualize their dream space and help them get creative in creating a space that is uniquely their own. I love it when strangers on IG tell me that I inspired them to add color or plants or to go vintage shopping. Vintage shopping is a huge pastime of mine – I love the thrill of the treasure hunt! I would go everyday if I could!
