Meet Kayla G of CanonKD in South Central (Crenshaw District)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla G.

Can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today. You can include as little or as much detail as you’d like.
I started off taking pictures in 10th or 11th grade at manual arts high school, I’d be hanging out with friends and they’d ask me to take their pictures, the pictures turned out better than expected and what was just a few friends turned into more people from school, back then I was only shooting on iPhone and had no thought of taking my work seriously, it was just something that I enjoyed doing whenever I could. It wasn’t until the beginning of my senior year when I realized that I had a natural eye for photography and wanted to take this seriously, my grandmother had dreams of being a photographer as well and her stories are also what inspired me, we’d spend time looking at photos she had taken throughout the years and some of the antique cameras she still has till this day. At that point I decided that I needed to get the professional gear needed to pursue my career. A few months after I graduated high school I had the camera and the equipment needed to start my professional career in photography, after having some deep thoughts about everything I’d decided changing my major in college from kinesiology to photo. From there I began networking and building relationships with other creatives/artists in my city, creating a name for myself in the music/media industry. My art tells the stories of my fellow creatives who are south central natives, as well as myself.

Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest struggle I’ve faced in my career was me finding my niche and style and also obtaining the equipment I needed in the beginning, over time I just did a lot of experimenting and taking any opportunity I was given. From there I realized it’s perfectly fine to have range and venture out to try new styles. Most importantly I learned not to compare myself to other artists, I’m not exactly where I want to be just yet but I do understand that growth is continual and this is only the beginning!

Tell us about your business/company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
CanonKD is an LA based photographer who specializes in concert, fashion, lifestyle and portrait photography that gives individuals an intricate vibe into the lives of many south central natives. I am most proud of all the support and respect I receive in my community, it’s definitely what matters the most. I wouldn’t be where I am now without each and every one of my supporters.

Who else deserves credit – have you had mentors, supporters, cheerleaders, advocates, clients or teammates that have played a big role in your success or the success of the business? If so – who are they and what role did they plan / how did they help.
My supporters and clients deserve the most recognition, I’d like to thank them for believing in me and always trusting my vision! Also a huge thanks to Bravo Capries, Kvng Royaal, Precious Castillo, Brandon and Elizabeth for their tremendous amount of support through it all.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love my city with everything in me, I love the fact that there’s so many talented individuals to be discovered here, each with their own unique story.
