Today we’d like to introduce you to Deidra George.
Deidra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As far back as I can remember at an early age, I was immersed in performing arts. Growing up in Oakland, CA I gravitated towards the creative culture as an outlet through dance, music & theatre. My home away from home was known then as the Alice Arts Center, now the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts. This Arts Center was the training ground and genesis of my artistry roots.
I have always had a deep desire to create, connect and inspire people in a positive way. My dreams began to materialize when I was accepted into the Performing Arts Academy at Skyline High School in Oakland. I trained rigorously as an advanced arts student on and off campus. Honestly, I was in love with the intrinsic nature of performing on stage and on camera, nothing compared to that joy.
As I began studying the entertainment business, I was completely enamored with the creative process of filmmaking and the power of multidimensional storytelling. I knew then I would one day work my way into the eminence of the film and television industry. Writing became a force that I could not ignore and more importantly added value as a performer. I loved to create worlds through expression of poetry, music, and eventually developing characters into scripts. I received a Bachelor of Arts in Radio, Television, Film & Theatre’ with Honors from San Jose State University, as well as a Certificate in Media and Television from California State University Los Angeles.
Over the following years, I co-produced music videos for local artists in the Bay Area. However, creatively I was still unfulfilled. I began seeking my authentic purpose. I knew I had a decision to make that would result in leaving the comfort of my hometown to pursue my dreams. I moved to Los Angeles to be in the heart of Hollywood, with nothing but my faith in God, a relentless drive and passion to create beyond the stars!
Now, a decade later, I have earned my stripes as a SAG-AFTRA member. I can honestly say my journey has been the anthesis of chasing purpose. I have managed many hats and worked with some incredibly talented people, notable companies, and organizations such as DuBose Entertainment, E! Style Network, Vh1, The Merge Summit, Lionsgate, Manifest Your Destiny Foundation by Hill Harper, OMD, Nate Parker Foundation, Disney and many more.
Has it been a smooth road?
I believe that challenges are necessary for growth. I have had many obstacles that propelled me forward in this journey. I recall being told that if I wanted to be successful in this industry, I had to choose one lane. In the beginning, I didn’t understand… I never wanted to be labeled as a “Struggling Artist”, so I became steadfast in learning the entertainment business inclusively. Over time I understood that focusing on one path wasn’t a negative notion, it was more about operating in excellence. One path mastered will open the doors to a host of opportunities. I have always made sure my values were in alignment with who I am as a person first; character is key, it will speak on your behalf when you are not in the room.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am now an Author of the book entitled, “See What Eyes Always Told.” I have a portfolio of successful projects under my belt. My focus forward is always walking in faith and to dive back into my first love of performing. I will continue to master my gifts, write and eventually build my own production company. I am devoted to advocating for other creatives and inspire positive representation of people of color.
“See What Eye Always Told,” is a masterful collection of poetry and songs that’s dynamically satisfying. You’ll journey through the exploration of creative expressions, inspiration & art. Each piece displays a candid ingenuity, which illustrates aspects of life with nuances of love, heartbreak, time, hope, faith, culture and revelation.”
This book speaks to my unique voice as a multidimensional artist including that of a producer, actor & creative.
