Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen White.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Stephen. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always enjoyed surfing, I have surfed for several years in different regions of the world and tried various kinds of surfing. But you never forget the first time you stood up and surf a wave. It’s an amazing feeling, and I wanna help others experience that. I started helping my friends who came to visit and progressed to where I am now with Fun Surf LA.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’m still learning the struggles, but dealing with the business aspects, getting permits and approvals to become legitimate is one of the biggest obstacles.
Please tell us about Fun Surf LA.
We called our school Fun Surf LA because the most important thing is to have fun – whether you stand up on your first try, you do a belly ride or you make it to your knees. We provide surf lessons, as well as surfboard, boogie board and wetsuit rentals. We try to gear the lesson towards the students’ abilities. When we work with beginners, we want to be sure that they have a fun time. I don’t schedule lesson according to the calendar like most of the schools do, I always check waves and try to be sure that conditions will be suitable and everyone will have fun.
What sets us apart from others is not only do we strive for our students to have a good time, but most participants are able to get photos and capture that magical moment of their first Californian surfing. We also try to educate and inform about our environment, ocean and pollution.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
This is my first start, so hopefully I wouldn’t want to start over. But if I had to, I would have done it sooner.
