Meet April Ferri of Widows Peak Salon in ChinaTown

Today we’d like to introduce you to April Ferri.

April, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After about a decade of doing hair in LA and moving from salon to salon, the last shop I worked at closed down and I decided I just didn’t want to work for anyone else anymore. I had a great experience at my last salon but the workforce had changed with social media and the interviewing process just felt like it didn’t fit me and my experience. I think the whole thing just made me realize I was ready for my own thing.

Has it been a smooth road?
I’ve been fortunate that I had a great clientele and have always been pretty smart with money but opening a business has been a whole new learning curve. So much to learn about the business aspect of it and being the person on the front line dealing with the less glamour’s aspects of it. Luckily I have a great business partner and a wonderful family that always encourages me in anything I take on, so that’s really kept me going. Covid was its own hurdle but honestly we’re still getting through that so I just have to take it day by day.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Widows Peak Salon story. Tell us more about the business.
Widows Peak Salon is a small boutique salon in Chinatown. We specialize in cuts and color but offer our services in a smaller more intimate setting. I’m really proud of our space and how inviting It feels. All the decor my partner and I picked our selves, even building some ourselves! Whenever someone comes in and compliments my space, I feel proud because it’s a reflection of me and my personal style. It makes me happy people like it and I feel happy to share it with others.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think eventually more salons will have this smaller feeling. With the Salon suite business growing rapidly, more stylists are realizing it’s not so scary to go your own way. I think I have the both of best worlds here. The salon suite life wasn’t for me, I liked the intimacy of it but felt claustrophobic, and the big salon life was too busy and loud for me. My cozy space is the perfect medium. Brick and mortar, but small. I think this model will be more popular and salons will become much more reflective of stylist’s individual style instead of big brand names.
