Today we’d like to introduce you to Dustin Houck.
Dustin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always been floored by music and its ability to impact people so fiercely. I grew up going to live shows as a kid. I can remember seeing Radiohead, Stevie Wonder, and Elton John as a ten years old. I was quickly fascinated with music at an early age and how it made me feel.
I started playing guitar in middle school everyday. Mostly as an outlet for built-up emotion and tension in my body, but also started finding my voice. Since then, it’s just been this thing that I do. It’s very intimate for me, and it feels sacred.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not. Lots of ups and downs. That is part of the beauty of it for me though. Songs come from so many places and spaces, so the thought of it being smooth seems a bit boring. Some of my best lyrics have come from dark and broken places.
Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I think my willingness to be myself sets me apart. I don’t feel a lot of pressure.
What were you like growing up?
My dad threw lots of parties at my house growing up, so I socialized into lots of different environments. I was a super upbeat kid always trying to prove myself to my older three brothers.
