Meet Ariella Fett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ariella Fett.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ariella. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have wanted to be a musician for as long as I can remember. As a kid, my dad introduced me to singer-songwriter legends like James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, and many other icons from that era. Growing up on their music really inspired me to focus on the writing aspect of a song. I have always found that making music makes me happy and I feel so lucky to have found that outlet early on in my life. As I got older, I began looking for any way possible to get myself out there. In middle school, I started putting out my music on YouTube, Instagram, and eventually SoundCloud. Although at the time it was really only my friends listening, I feel that this is what kickstarted my drive to take my music more seriously.

My freshman year of high school is when I began to collaborate with other musicians within my community. I found that working with my peers for the first time was extremely fulfilling. I eventually was able to attend the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music High School Summer Program at NYU which is where I got to learn so much more about the business side of music first hand by meeting with executives of industry giants like Atlantic Records, Spotify, and Apple Music; and also by getting to explore historic studios and venues of NYC like Electric Lady and the Bitter End.

After High School, I began at CalArts where I majored in Experimental Pop. My first year of college is where I truly feel I found my voice. I began performing more, working with others more and I had the chance to record some great demos with Grammy award-winning sound engineer John Baffa. I really was able to find my style within the Indie-Folk genre. I am currently working on an Album to come out on all platforms in 2021 from all the songs I wrote throughout my freshman year of college.

In recent years the musicians that have inspired me the most are Gregory Alan Iskov, Pheobe Bridgers, Crumb, Angel Olson, Alexandra Savior, and many other Indie-Folk or Indie-Rock musicians. I am excited to see where the next few years take me!

Has it been a smooth road?
Up until the last couple of years, I was very very scared of performing. It was through my auditions for different colleges and my first semester at CalArts that I was able to conquer that fear. With everyone in my family having a degree in some sort of math or science, I didn’t grow up in a particularly creative environment. Visiting music schools for the first time really made me feel validated in my creative pursuit as I was surrounded by a diverse community of young creatives for the first time. Although I never felt particularly out of place as a musician growing up, I defiantly never felt completely fulfilled until I experienced the CalArts community my freshman year of college.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am a singer-songwriter within the Indie-Folk genre. When writing music, I really try my best to focus on the lyrics. When I listen to music, I can’t help but pay close attention to the lyrics, so I defiantly make sure my songs mean exactly what I want them to mean before I call a song finished.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The music industry has already been evolving rapidly over the past decade. With the invention of streaming and social media, the traditional role of labels and record deals has mostly disappeared. The next 5-10 years will defiantly see a continued change in the independence of an artist.
