Meet Sterling Hedges

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sterling Hedges.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sterling. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Born out of Pasadena, I found a strong connection to nature in the foothills sitting to the North. As well, I felt entranced by the visual history of Hollywood Cinema and the performance bound to it. I now work to forward a conceptual biding to nature alongside utilization and analyzation of visual aesthetics.

Has it been a smooth road?
It seemed as though a road unpaved up until a certain broadening of perspective. While I felt limited by lack of representation of people from my community in the art world, identifying white supremacy as not just an oppression happening outside of my body but further as the root of my self-doubt was (and is) integral to continuing to produce work.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Although much of my work operates under an analysis of our relationship to nature, the nuances of the conditions of production often dictate the ways in which the audience receives information. While installation of my work is heavily contingent on the space it is viewed within, the researched-based content often serves to match this relationship to the immediate network.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Los Angeles can be “forward thinking” in comparison to other areas of the United States but is often caught in the neo-liberal paradigm of assuming the universality of their stance.
