Meet Zimmy Moon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zimmy Moon.

So, before we jump into specific questions about your music, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Hi, my name is Zachary West, better known as “Zimmy Moon.” Originally I’m from St. Louis MO. Moved here to LA about six years ago (May of 2014) with little to no money, just three suitcases and a dream of pursuing my music. I’ve always known as a kid that LA was the place I wanted to live, But growing up in the Southside Projects of St. Louis, I never thought it could honestly happen. I know it’s probably cliche to say but most of my childhood friends are either dead or in jail. NO CAP! If it wasn’t for this girl I was dating, I probably wouldn’t have even gotten the opportunity to move out here. So shoutout to her!

But yea, I’ve been writing and making music for as long as I can remember. I was never a bad kid in school but more than likely, I was in the back of the room writing raps! This probably started about 2nd grade. I started playing instruments around the same time. Learning how to play the drums and just being indifferent bands/drumlins kinda followed me all the way through high school. I didn’t start taking music seriously until probably my freshman year of high school. That’s when I really realized I wanted to have a rap career and things started to really fall in place for me. I was a part of a rap duo with my cousin called “2Tone” we actually had a big fanbase in our city at one point with our songs being played on the radio and just consistent shows. We got to go on tour a few times because my uncle and aunt own a booking agent at the time and would book celebrities for shows in various cities and would have us open up for them. That experience was probably the most memorable and fun I’ve had with music so far.

At the time, we didn’t understand the music business and my cousin was leaving for college so our group kinda broke up and everyone started doing their own thing. I never stopped making music though… just had to take the solo route. Fast forward after I graduated high school in 2012, I attended a college in St. Louis for Filmmaking because I really didn’t know what else to do and my mom raised all of her kids to pursue college after high school so I felt like I really didn’t have a choice. Eventually, I started shooting/editing my own music videos with a camera I would rent from school. My plan was to transfer schools after a year a two-out here since the girl I was dating at the time already lived out here. Eventually, I did move but didn’t want to continue school because of the price and I had just lost interest in filming. Two months after me living out here my GF had broken up with me and I thought I would have to move back home but luckily I had made some really good connects in a very short time and had friends that were genuine enough to let me stay with them.

Since then, I’ve started shooting/editing videos again. I have also been producing and making all of my own beats for about a year now. I also do the cover art and graphic design. I went to bartending school. I learned how to DJ and started a part-time gig at this bar in Santa Clarita. The list goes on, hahaha… Besides releasing my own music, right now, I’ve also been working with this Artist “Helena” you guys actually might know her. I’m shooting and directing all of her visuals as well as doing all of her cover artwork. She’s also let me help write and produce a few records for her as well that should be releasing soon. So stay tuned! I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to be apart of her team and things are moving really fast.

Has it been a smooth road?
Not at all. My mom has five kids. I have two older sisters, one older brother and a younger brother. She raised all of us as a single mother, so things were always hard for us growing up. We lived in the projects. Half the time, my mom was at work so my oldest sister pretty much raised us. I wasn’t allowed to see my dad until like halfway through high school, so that affected me a lot.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
Before anything, I’m an artist. I sing/rap, engineer and produce all my won records. I would consider my main business Filming right now. But I also get booked a lot for photoshoots and I’ve been selling a lot of beats lately. I recently just dropped a new song called “Valley Girl” it’s actually my verse single produced by me. I’ve got the cover art if you guys could share it that would be dope! Thank you.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
LA is the perfect place for anyone who wants to be in the entertainment business, whether is acting, dancing, singing or whatever. There’s opportunity’s everywhere! you just gotta go out and get them
