Meet Sara Geiss of Something Events in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Geiss.

Sara, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Seven years ago, when I was planning my own wedding, I opted to add the “wedding coordinator” package with my wedding venue. I was very disappointed in the site coordinator. After my wedding I helped a couple of friends with their weddings, and decided I wanted to make it a full time gig. I interned with Jesi Haack Design & The Love Riot while preparing to start my own event planning company. Then in 2012 I took a leap and made it official, and opened Something Events.

We started out just setting up decorations and doing month of coordination, and then added full service and design. Our goal was to help couples and be by their side from first contact to the end of their wedding. I really didn’t want anyone to have an underwhelming “day of coordinator” like I experienced. Your wedding day should be frustration and worry free for everyone involved, especially the bridal party and family.

Has it been a smooth road?
Our road has been a bit bumpy, but not completely in a negative way. We’ve worked with all kinds of couples and have had some really great experiences. But sometimes the tears of joy barely overcome the tears of frustration. I’ve been literally almost sobbing at a first look between a bride and her father, but I’ve also wanted to cry because a caterer refused to bus a 250 person wedding! Two years ago we had our busiest year ever, while I was pregnant for most of wedding season! Our current struggle is keeping up with social media, but our clients come first and sometimes that means less time for twitter. Every wedding and event has brought us something new and we learn new lessons with each experience.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Something Events is an event coordination business. We primarily do weddings, but in the past year we’ve started to work on other events like birthdays, office parties, anniversaries, etc. We do pretty much anything, planning, coordination, and design wise. I’m really proud of how we are versatile enough to work on events with all kinds of needs. Budget is always a challenge but it feels great when we can help a couple get the wedding they’re dreaming of. I’m also beyond proud of our team. My co-coordinator is also my close friend (we met working together at a day care many years ago) and we complement each other so well that our events and planning go so smoothly. My other helpers are close to me personally as well, and we work amazingly well together like a happy family, we’re truly a well-rounded team.

What really sets us apart is we always put our heart into our events, clients aren’t a dollar sign and vendors aren’t minions. We build relationships with everyone involved. From the start I’ve been complimented on our calm demeanor and our professionalism and it’s something we strive to do for every event.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles has been a great city for us. It’s diverse with a plethora of venues, vendors, life styles, and the city is accepting of everyone! We started out advertising and trying to work mainly in Orange County but once we ventured to the Los Angeles area doors started really opening for us. We still do work in Orange County but Los Angeles has become our home.
