Today we’d like to introduce you to Colin Campbell.
Colin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Bagpipe camp. It all started at bagpipe camp. Before your thoughts spiral down anymore, let me quell your quandaries by telling you that it does in fact exist, that I did go, and that it did not directly help my dating life. Bagpipe camp did provide me with many opportunities. and one was doing my very first performance in front of 800 people, and after that I was hooked. In high school, I developed more of an eclectic skill set by introducing myself to juggling, unicycling, gymnastics, beatboxing, breakdancing, and generally just being a goofball. All that goofing around paid off though because since then, I have been doing my own one man circus comedy show all over the globe for the past 12 years and I haven’t looked back since.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I was a streaming success right out of the gate. The whole thing has been a cake walk. THE END.
Kidding! 😀 Oh man I was bad, I was sooooo bad when I first started. I would be playing the bagpipes on a unicycle in Venice Beach and people would be walking by being like “bagpipes on the unicycle? pssh…seen it.” It probably took me a good two years before I had a performance that was even tolerable to watch. As I started to hone my craft, I would see the multitude of things that didn’t work, but I would also start to see the couple of little things that did work. I would spend countless hours writing, taking things out, putting things in, and the alterations never seemed to stop. Then after a couple of years, it started to just flow more, I wasn’t constantly trying to think what I should or shouldn’t do, I just knew. My whole performance has just sort of become second nature to me now. I might still scramble from time to time, but Point A to Point B is a lot easier to see these days then it used to be.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am in the business of comedy entertainment. My specialties include hosting/emcee’ing, physical comedy, rapport building, and circus skills. My claim to fame is my bagpipes on the unicycle routine and my most impressive trick has got to be playing the bagpipes on a 10ft unicycle while juggling two knives in the other hand.
I am most proud of the fact that I built a career off of something nobody would ever imagine, allowing me to carve a very gratifying and fulfilling path through life.
I believe what sets me apart from others is my approach to creativity, playfulness, high energy, absurdity, and quick-wittedness.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as doing something you love and continuing to grow in the ways you want to grow. I continually check in with myself to see if I’m still enjoying what I’m doing, and if I’m not, I move more toward what I want to be doing. As long as I continue to follow my passions and the things that ignite me inside, I always feel like I’ll land on my feet. The more something starts to feel like a 9-5 the further off the path I know I am. I haven’t had too many moments where I’ve felt off my path, but when they do occur, I listen and take the steps to redirect course.
